New acid-tolerant rhizobia strains can increase nodulation of faba beans on acid soil. However, sustained ability of faba beans to fix atmospheric nitrogen strongly depends on appropriate lime programs. Inoculating faba beans with peat inoculants significantly increased nodulation compared to the controls that were not inoculated.

Applying inoculant at sowing has proven to be beneficial to early season crop vigour in faba bean production. Adequate phosphorus fertiliser increased early season crop vigour, biomass and grain yields. Applying 75 kg/ha MAP to faba bean at sowing doubled biomass production compared to faba bean being sown with no fertiliser, at Strawberry Hill in 2019.

Potassium applied to faba bean at sowing and/or at flowering had no effect on plant height, biomass or grain yield.

Tebuconazole foliar fungicide is the superior treatment for controlling this disease, showing that Systiva® seed treatment or Uniform® in furrow were not effective fungicide treatments for control of cercospora leaf spot. 182 Infection from cercospora leaf spot was high early in the season at eight node stage where Uniform mildly suppressed severity compared to the nil treatment. However, by spring the standard tebuconazole treatment at six node growth stage prevented further spread of the disease.

The grain yield of faba beans significantly increased at higher plant densities especially when the when the diseases were controlled. Despite a late autumn break, with adequate chemical disease control, PBA Samira grain yields more than tripled (from 1.5 t/ha to 5.4 t/ha) when plant densities increased from 5 plants/m2 to 45 plants/m2 at Tarrington in 2019.

In 2019 at Lake Bolac, faba bean grain yield was reduced by 15% when the crop emerged on June 12 compared to May 23. PBA Zahra and PBA Nasma had larger seed sizes than PBA Samira and PBA Marne.

AF12025 and PBA Nasma, which are varieties with shorter season length outperformed varieties with longer season lengths (PBA Samira and PBA Bendoc) when sown in spring.

• Soil amelioration, particularly liming with incorporation to depth, increases break crop options.
• Faba beans can be successfully grown on light soil types if pH is managed.
• Subsequent nitrogen fertiliser programs should take account of residual N to optimise the benefits of pulse crops.

Average trial yield was 3.8 t/ha, close to the potential as identified by Yield Prophet during the season. No significant differences in yield were found between stubble treatments (stubble retained, worked or removed) and nutrient treatments (normal practice, normal practice plus additional nutrients to enhance stubble breakdown). Changes in Soil Organic Matter fractions over the duration of the trial (2012 to 2014) resulting from the stubble and nutrient treatments will be assessed in March, 2015.

No difference in yield or quality was noted for the stubble or nutrient treatments. It is likely that soil carbon is being increased as the additional nutrients did not increase yield. Increasing soil carbon is a slow process and several years are needed to see whether these treatments do increase soil carbon. A range of sites across southern Australia have been chosen to see if soil carbon can be increased.

The extra nutrition treatment had no effect on yield or grain quality this season. In the 2012 season the stubble removed treatment had the highest yield.

Average trial yield was 2.8 t/ha, approximately 1 t/ha below the nitrogen unlimited potential as identified by Yield Prophet® during the season. No significant differences in yield were found between stubble treatments (stubble retained, worked or removed) and nutrient treatments (normal practice, normal practice plus additional nutrients to enhance stubble breakdown). After three years of trial work, no significant differences in soil carbon were found between the stubble and nutrient treatments.

Sustainable and productive farming practices will require that water be used where it falls and this entails that water be used by plants and not access the water table through either surface run-off or permeating below the root zone.

Higher sowing rates resulted in higher dry matter yield at late flowering and higher seed yield with no significant differences between varieties 'Fenugreek' and 'A287'.

Fluid fertilisers available in South Australia are relatively expensive compared with the granular fertilisers available. In early 2004, DAP and MAP were available on the Upper Eyre Peninsula at a cost of about $422/tonne delivered. The unit cost of P was $1.92/kg with MAP and $2.11/kg with DAP. In this case, any N combined with the P was supplied at no extra cost, with P the major limiting nutrient.

• Kaspa continues to show a yield advantage over earlier maturing varieties and blends in regions with high yield potential (eg Turretfield) due to its later maturity and subsequent higher yield potential.
• Earlier maturing varieties and blends may confer a yield advantage over Kaspa in lower yielding situations/seasons.
• This work will continue for a number of years reusing the seed from each location to identify any potential benefit for growers using a mix of these varieties to manage pea yields across variable seasonal conditions.

• Kaspa continues to show a yield advantage over earlier maturing varieties and blends in
  regions with high yield potential (eg Turretfield). This is due to its later maturity and
  subsequent higher yield potential.
• Earlier maturing varieties and blends will generally provide better yield stability compared to
  Kaspa in lower yielding situations/seasons eg Minnipa, Snowtown.
• At sites with generally lower yield potential (eg Minnipa, Snowtown), blends containing Kaspa
  may confer a yield advantage over earlier maturing varieties in some favourable seasons (eg
  Snowtown in 2013).

• Overall lentil and pea grain yields averaged 1.18 t/ha across all sites and treatments.
• There was no significant foliar disease and the major yield limiting factor was the lack of late season rainfall, only 25mm in September and October.
• Although only small the slightly higher grain yield at the eastern site compared to the western site highlights the importance of paddock and crop selection to maximise pulse yields in these more marginal areas.
• A similar result was found in 2011 where there was a 0.46t/ha yield increase from the western site to the eastern site, 1.76 t/ha to 2.23 t/ha respectively.

• All varieties showed similar levels of yield loss from crop topping two weeks prior to the recommended timing (rye grass milk dough stage) and no yield loss at the recommended timing under dry finishing conditions in 2014 and therefore no one variety was more or less suited to this agronomic practice.

• Yield losses from Early crop-topping generally followed cultivar maturity, with latest maturating varieties (eg Glenroy) showing the highest yield losses. Glenroy was also the only variety to show yield loss at the Recommended timing, supporting previous findings that later maturing varieties are not as well suited to crop-topping as earlier maturing recent releases PBA Twilight, PBA Gunyah and PBA Oura.

• The optimum hay cut timing for both maximum biomass production and ease of drying (i.e. before pod set) is likely to be approximately 7-14 days after commencement of flowering.
• Varieties with later flowering and pod set are likely to be better suited to hay production as this allows maximum vegetative growth prior to cutting, and extends hay cut timing into more favourable (warmer and quicker) drying conditions.

• Similarly to other seeding population trials, there was a significant interaction with seeding rate and grain yield.
• There was also a significant varietal difference between the 6 varieties. Again there was no interaction of variety by population across the trial.
• Again also this is of little concern as we wish to compare populations within a variety not across
  a range of varieties.

• There were significant responses to both increasing plant density and variety across the
  entire trial (curvature and slope) but no interactions with variety.
• This is of little concern as we wish to compare populations within a variety not across a range of varieties.

• The main effects of variety and plant density were highly significant.
• There was a distinct and significant curvature response to increasing densities and this effect was similar across all varieties.

• Yields were very low reflecting the very dry season.

• Field peas performed exceptionally well at Minnipa in 2012, despite a decile 3 growing season and a rapid season finish. This is likely due to good stored soil moisture levels, good early winter rainfall amounts and generally mild winter temperatures.

Grain yield of PBA Oura field pea was 400 kg/ha at Kimba, 2019, due to dry seasonal conditions. A foliar fungicide strategy is only recommended for crops that have a potential yield of at least 1.5 t/ha. However, it is not economic to apply fungicides in crops with grain yields below 1.5 t/ha.

Field pea cultivar mixtures show potential in terms of decreasing lodging and increasing harvestability. Cultivar combinations dd not increase biomass and grain yield compared to sole varieties in 2019.

Seed dressings were more effective at controlling the mild infections in Hart while seed dressings or foliar fungicides were not effective in controlling the severe infection levels in Minnipa. Seed dressing is more effective than foliar sprays for low to moderate disease severity, but for severe disease conditions both were less effective.

• The inoculation treatments did not significantly affect the number of nodules per plant despite the paddock having no history of chickpea production.  However, field pea production was influenced by the treatments.

• Yields were relatively high at these sites in 2012, particularly given the drier than average growing season. Chickpeas performed particularly well, yielding equal to lentils at Minlaton
  and higher than lentils at Pinery. Yields may have been buoyed by the presence of stubble in all treatments, helping to conserved soil moisture, and the mild (although dry) finish to the season.

• Despite consistent stubble loads between treatments, differences in lodging (in all crops) and
  grain yield (field peas only) were generated between the three stubble heights at Pinery in 2013.
• In a similar trial in 2012, stubble treatments generated significant responses for biomass, maturity and grain yield.
• This supports previous work conducted by this project showing that the physical arrangement of stubble (ie standing versus slashed) can have a significant effect on the growth and performance of pulse crop types, as well as the amount of stubble present (ie retained versus removed).

• Our results show that stubble management (reduction in height from 40cm to 5cm) had no improvement on yield and lodging between crop types and varieties within a crop type under the seasonal conditions in 2014.

PBA Butler was the highest yielding variety at Inverleigh in 2019 with an average yield of 4.5 t/ha for both sowing dates. Average gross margin for 2019 was $835/ha with a field pea price of $400/t. This is the predicted grain price for the 2020, which is lower than the long-term average price of $459/t.

• there was a highly significant effect of sowing time across all varieties.

Field pea grain yields were generally well above average across south eastern Australia in 2005, despite late and or dry sowing in many regions. Timely spring rainfall and mild temperatures at flowering were the main factors contributing to high yields. The mild spring temperatures at podding also produced grain of relatively good size and with few splits and breakages compared to previous years.

• An aggressive fodder species with good herbicide options is effective at controlling weeds.
• Grazing in summer or winter has no significant effect on weeds. Instead, controlling the late-in-crop weeds that survive grazing and preventing them setting seed is what’s important.
• The timing of seed removal operations is critical. Hay can be just as effective at reducing weeds as silage if it is timed correctly to prevent seed set.
• Modelling has shown that the longer the pasture phase, the greater the weed control. Early work indicates that this may be the case but future trials will need to confirm this.
   

• Biomass production at Hart in 2013 averaged 4.2 t/ha at the early pod development stage, and 5.0 t/ha at maturity across the trial.
• Kaspa, Morgan and PBA Coogee have generally shown similar biomass levels at flowering in 2013, although Kaspa has shown higher grain yield.
• PBA Hayman produced the highest biomass of all the field pea and vetch varieties at the early pod development stage, particularly when sown early.
• Vetch varieties showed equal or greater biomass to Kaspa, Morgan and PBA Coogee at the early pod development stage, but lower than PBA Hayman.
• Biomass of field pea varieties at flowering was maximised at higher sowing densities (75 and 100 plants/m2 ), however this resulted in yield loss at some sites.

• Stripe Rust (SR) caused yield losses in all but the highly resistant variety Sunstate (8) at most sites.
• Fungicides helped to protect yield potentials in susceptible varieties, except when SR pressure was either very low or very high.
• Timely early and late protection appeared more important than fungicide choice at Z39
• The genetic resistance in Sunstate (8) was clearly the most outstanding form of SR control when disease pressure was very high, exceeding any fungicide strategy used on susceptible varieties.
• Fungicide protection of SR on susceptible varieties is a practical and profitable option in the absence of resistant wheat varieties with desired agronomic traits.

• H45 proved far more susceptible to stripe rust than Diamondbird in 2004.
• With the dry conditions of 2004, when yields were higher (2-3 t/ha) stripe rust infection significantly decreased yield in H45 by 16%-17%. Grain quality effects were also recorded at the site with the highest level of infection.
• Jockey seed treatment provided some residual control of stripe rust at two out ofthe three sites.
• Foliar fungicides proved very effective at reducing stripe rust infection.
• Only the combination of seed applied + foliar fungicide resulted in a significantlyhigher yield and quality than the nil treatment with H45 wheat.
• Yellow leaf spot had no effect on yield or quality of the susceptible varietyDiamondbird.

One way ploughing slightly improved establishment, head numbers, biomass production and yield but is not a viable long term solution for the severe non wetting on this soil type.

Deep ripping and spading improved head numbers by over 60% and biomass production by 87% compared to the control.

Grain yields were improved by over a 1 t/ha and gross margin by about $200/ha when treatment costs were amortized over 5 years in the combined ripping and spading treatments.

Four problem sub-clover species Yarloop, Dinninup, Geraldton and Dwalgenup.

Oestrogenic clovers are responsible for a variety of symptoms in sheep including reduced ewe fertility, difficult births, prolapse of the uterus, urethral blockages in wethers and udder development in maiden ewes and wethers.

Paddock assessments have confirmed the widespread presence of oestrogenic clovers in the South East and Kangaroo Island.

Growers are encouraged to assess their own paddocks for the presence of problem species and their potential impact on their flock.

• In 2017 and 2018 a total of 61 paddocks were assessed from 10 properties on Kangaroo Island (KI) and the South East (SE) of SA with 44% having the potential to cause fertility issues in ewes, with visual assessments ranking them moderate to high.
• Whole farm assessments of the two focus demonstration farms have identified that 38% of the paddocks were moderate to high risk on the SE property and 60% of the paddocks were moderate to high risk on the KI property.
• Producers found that identifying all four of the oestrogenic clover cultivars was difficult.
• Undertaking paddock assessments to determine the risk rating of a paddock is time consuming for most producers.
   

• There were few significant differences between the two systems.
• The most important difference was a significant reduction in conception rate of Merino ewes from the Saltbush system. Wool production and body characteristics between the ewe bloodlines were significantly different but were as expected – the contrasting bloodlines had been bred that way.
• If belts of OMSB are incorporated into low rainfall mixed farms and managed in a similar manner to that tested here, it is unlikely that any worthwhile productivity benefits will result.

• Grazing treatment had no influence on pasture sward composition when averaged over seasons.
• Grazing, rather than the type of grazing management, increased soil carbon under native pastures.
• Soil under cell-grazed pastures had a significantly greater carbon stock to 0.30 m compared with ungrazed pastures (32.9 t C/ha vs 25.6 t C/ha), however, there was no difference between cell and tactically grazed (29.5 t C/ha) pastures.

• PBA Herald XT, together with tolerant breeding lines CIPAL1101 and CIPAL1102, show much
  improved tolerance to a range of group B herbicides compared to Nipper. The tolerant varieties
  showed no yield loss to a number of herbicides, whereas Nipper showed up to 100% yield loss (eg high rate of ‘Imi mix’).

• Response of lentils to herbicide treatments varied with seasonal conditions, method of herbicide incorporation, stubble coverage, soil texture and fertility.
• Treatments that showed high plant damage generally incurred high yield losses, however low levels of chlorosulfuron plant damage still resulted in significant yield loss in some trials

• Penetration of fungicides into large bean canopies can present a problem, particularly in higher rainfall areas, where canopies are larger and incidence of disease is higher.
• Manipulation of  bean canopies through reducing height and density would allow much easier fungicide application, efficacy and perhaps even reduce disease intensity in itself.

Knowing your initial soil nitrogen levels will assist in determining if there is likely to be a benefit of including nitrogen and other nutrients for humification when incorporating stubble. If initial soil nitrogen levels (0-60cms) are adequate i.e. above 70kg N/ha in the high rainfall zone, and above 50 kg N/ha in the medium rainfall zone, then the addition of nitrogen may not provide immediate responses – depending on the stubble nutrient levels.

• Thirty two barley grass populations were collected from grower paddocks from Eyre Peninsula and Upper North regions in 2019 and screened for resistance to major herbicide groups in 2020. This was not a random survey because most of these populations were considered difficult to control with herbicides. 
•  All of these barley grass populations collected in 2019 from Eyre Peninsula and Upper North regions were completely killed by glyphosate and paraquat and were rated as herbicide susceptible.
• Resistance to the FOP herbicide quizalofop was confirmed in 50% (n=16) of these targeted populations tested in 2020. In addition to this, 19% of the populations (n=6) were classified as developing resistance. 
• Ten barley grass populations were confirmed resistant to clethodim at 250mL/ha. At the higher clethodim dose (500mL/ha), only three populations were rated as resistant. This result is consistent with research results for annual ryegrass where higher rates of clethodim can improve weed control. Growers could improve barley grass control by increasing clethodim dose but this is unlikely to be a long-term solution to the problem. 
• Out of 1 O clethodim resistant populations, only 3 showed resistance to butroxydim at 90 g/ha and only 1 was resistant at 180 g/ha. These results are consistent with the findings from the previous year, which showed the susceptibility of many clethodim-resistant populations to butroxydim.
• Resistance to the IMI herbicides still appears to be very low in barley grass. Only one barley grass population from Eyre Peninsula was found to be highly resistant to Intercept® and showed no reduction in plant survival or biomass. 

 

• The early season climatic events of waterlogging (Wanilla) and hail damage (Tooligie) were not
  conducive for small scale field trial studies, but reflected wide scale industry issues from these
  regions.
• Although this meant that some measurements could not be taken, reasonable results were
  still gained from these trials.

There was a strong early visual response to applied phosphorus (P), with the nil P plots lacking vigour early. This was confirmed with significantly better P levels in the plant tissue up to 35 kg of P applied see There was no significant response to applied copper, zinc or sulphur. There was a significant yield response to applied P, however at the highest rate of applied P the yield began to fall. This is possibly due to the increased dry matter produced using more moisture and as a consequence of the dry finish in November losing some yield potential. In this situation the most appropriate rate of applied P for this year would have been between 15 - 20 kg P/ha.

• Phosphorus (P) responses were visual and evident from 3 leaf stage until the end of September with the 50 of P treatments being well ahead of the nil P.
• The 15 P plots also were visibly behind.
• There was a strong trend to increased yield with increasing rate of P applied, however this was not significant due to the high CV as a result of crown rot.
• The zinc and copper cote treatments performed better than most treatments and were significantly better than the nil P treatment, but not significantly better than the straight 25 P treatment as DAP. 
• Grain proteins were lower than expected with a very high CV 13%, usually grain protein CV's are about 2 - 3% showing that there was a dramatic effect of possibly crown rot in the site.
• The site had been in barley the year prior which is the best cereal host for carry over of crown rot and a dry finish makes the crown rot worse. 
   

• Regional survey on the nutrient status of nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P), Potassium (K), Sulphur (S) and the micro-nutrients Zinc (Zn) and Copper (Cu) of soils in the HRZ of south-eastern Australia undertaken and status report prepared.
• Two omission trials sown in 2015 to test crop yield response and the interactions between nutrients where N, P, K and S and micro-nutrients Zn and Cu are omitted.
• Seasonal conditions resulted in the only responses being received from nitrogen applications; the omission trials to be repeated in 2016 under different seasonal conditions.

• There is wide phenological diversity in Australian canola varieties. From a 28 March sowing date the fastest variety, Nuseed® Diamond, started flowering on 22 June and the slowest variety, Hyola® 970CL (winter type), started flowering on 28 September, a difference of 98 days from sowing to start of flowering.

• The highest yield of 4.7 t/ha came from sowing fast (e.g. Nuseed® Diamond) and mid (e.g. Pioneer® 45Y25 (RR)) spring phenology types in mid-April to early May. Sowing the fast variety early (Nuseed® Diamond) resulted in significant frost damage, reducing yield and quality, as it started flowering in June.

• The winter varieties and the slow spring varieties had stable yield across sowing dates, but generally yielded closer to 4 t/ha.

• Open-pollinated (OP), triazine tolerant (TT) varieties yielded within 5% of hybrid non-TT varieties (with similar phenology).
 

• Other than the control Anapurna, five cultivars yielded in excess of 10t/ha these were LPB16-0598, SFR86-092, SFR86-071, AGFWH004418 and AGFWH004618.
• SFR86-092 exceeded 11t/ha.
• Many of these cultivars (where tested) have performed well in 1st stage screens.
• Despite stripe rust susceptibility and yellowing flecks over the canopy Catapult (mid – late spring AH in south eastern region) gave promising yields, and although they were not significantly better than Scepter its phenology is more suited to late April sowing.
• 138 kg N/ha plus 10N at sowing with a soil N reserve of 103.5kg N/ha (0-60cm) was sufficient to optimize yield at this site with an average protein content of 11.7% (range 10.4 – 13.9%).

The HRZ of south-eatsern Australia has a high yield potential but for this potenial to be realised, new traits will need to be introduced. Important traits are likely to include high seed numbers per pod, drought tolerance during flowering and seed development and good blackleg resistance. Further testing of germplasm under a wider range of conditions will be needed to verify findings and develop cultivars adapted to the region. 

• VBHT805 is an inidazolinone tolerant barley variety in the final stages of evaluation and commercialisation.
• VBHT805 could be a useful tool for managing Group B soil residual herbicide carryover for improved grass weed control in intensive cereal rotations.

• The trial was sown into dry soil on the 11th May. This trial was indicative of many lupin crops within the West Midlands region in 2010, with establishment and weed control issues. Establishment was inconsistent across the trial site with seasonal conditions, non-wetting soil and rhizoctonia root rot contributing to uneven plant numbers and poor growth within some plots. Herbicide management of weeds, particularly ryegrass, was less effective than expected, resulting in high weed burdens, especially in plots with poor lupin establishment.
• Anthracnose was introduced into plots 4 weeks after sowing but warm dry weather following introduction of infection and long dry spells during the growing season reduced disease development.
• Disease assessments at crop maturity indicated that despite high levels of inoculum being introduced only low levels of disease were present within the trial and differences between varieties were not statistically significant. Approximately 10% of the moderately susceptible Jenabillup plants suffered stem infection, the resistant variety Tanjil and resistant breeding lines had between 2-4% of plants with stem infection. Pod infection levels were low across the trial due to dry weather during podding.
• Due to uneven establishment, variable soil moisture, root disease and weed burden, individual plot yields varied from 0.5 t/ha to 2 t/ha across the site (average 1.4 t/ha), however neither variety nor anthracnose infection significantly affected yield.
• In seasons with good rainfall, anthracnose can be a yield constraint for lupin production in the high-medium rainfall regions of the northern agricultural region (particularly in areas with abundant blue lupins); the anthracnose resistance in current advanced breeding lines will reduce disease development and yield loss.

Having an indication of the stubble load present at harvest in cereals and canola (based on grain yield harvested) will help with future decisions around harvest management and management of stubble loads during the fallow period.

Grower adoption of rotary spading and mouldboard ploughing in the West Midlands has been steadily increasing.

• This trial demonstrates the productivity and financial benefits that can arise from implementing rotary spading and indicates that the practice of deep ripping prior to spading appears to be worthwhile as not only does it remove obstacles and make spading easier it also appears to be a benefit to crop growth and productivity particularly in times of drought.
• Soil compaction was a significant constraint on this site and deep ripping alone has shown an advantage. Ideally controlled traffic system should be implemented after deep tillage to prevent re-compaction and loss of these benefits.

• Knowing how much water is available at any point in time, and where the crop is using water from is extremely valuable when making management decisions.
• Potential water extraction depends not only crop type but also crop growth during the season.
• Correct data interpretation is critical for success when using soil moisture data.
   

In 2020, soil surfactant treatments applied to non-wetting soil sites at Newdegate, Cuballing, Gibson, Nyabing and Dunn Rock showed no significant differences in crop establishment or yield production between treatments. 

• Most legumes favour pHCa > 5.0 to a depth of at least 20 cm; acidic layers below 5 cm adversely affect root growth, nodulation, plant vigour and N2 fixation potential of acid-sensitive pulses.
• Ineffective incorporation of lime under minimum tillage systems confines the lime effect to the shallow surface layers (0-5 cm).
• An ‘acid throttle’ located between 5 to 20 cm in the soil profile is not detected using soil samples collected at standard depths of 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm, finer sampling at 5 cm intervals is recommended to detect acidic layers.
• Apply and incorporate adequate rates of fine grade, high quality lime at least 12 months before sowing acid-sensitive species to allow time for the lime to react and increase pH to the depth of incorporation.

A trial was established west of Moora in 2016 to investigate in season potassium response in barley. The main objective was to compare Lokomotive, a liquid potassium product, to the more commonly used granular muriate of potash (MoP).  Both soil and plant sample analysis showed the site to be marginal/deficient in potassium. Treatments were applied at GS 32. This timing was chosen as potassium deficiency is most commonly identified late in the growing season, when visual symptoms appear, and confidence in an economic response to applications of MoP in the current season is diminishing. At the time of application there were typical potassium leaf deficiency symptoms on the lower leaves. 

Good growing conditions were experienced in Moora in 2016 and resulted in high barley yields of 4.17 to 4.39 t/ha. There was a small yield response (1.7% to 5.3%) from both Lokomotive and MoP however this was not significantly different to the untreated control. The small response to potassium in 2016 may be attributed to the wet spring conditions that would have made potassium in the soil more available to the crop. Further evaluation of in season potassium application is required when spring conditions aren’t as favorable as 2016.  

 

 

• Yield differences between soil types were less than seen in previous seasons on this paddock.
• Yield responded to an extra 25kg/ha N at sowing on the deep yellow sand over gravel and shallow gravel yielded around 2.5t/ha.

• Yield differences between soil types were less than seen in previous seasons on this paddock, although they did yield in expected order.
• Starting nitrogen levels were quite high (>100kg N/ha) due to previous crop history.
• Overall with the better responses to applied N being achieved on the better soils or where there was plenty of starting soil nitrogen, this experiment has given encouragement to the idea of managing soil types (or management zones) differentially for N.

• The goal of achieving a 10% increase in water use efficiency appears to have been achieved quite comfortably as evidenced by the entry and exit survey results.
• Farmers in the Upper North district have madesubstantial gains in knowledge, skills and practice change to increase their water use efficiency.

• No yield differences were observed between the incorporated stubble and the standing stubble plots despite differences being recorded in plant growth during the year.
• The dry spring conditions had an impact on grain yields with no significant difference observed between treatments. 

• Yield differences were observed between the incorporated stubble and standing stubble plots.
• The hot dry conditions during November had a major impact on grain yield.
• Lodging was a problem in all of the plots with the incorporated plots particularly affected.
• At this stage no significat tincrease in soil orgainic carbon was observed.

• All sandy sites were responsive to both physical interventions and CL addition. The size of the response varied for each site ranging from up to 127% on the most productive sand (North hill top) up to 191% on the least productive sand (South mid slope).
• The grain yield response to physical incorporation method (deep ripping and spading) and CL was generally greater than 10%, but the ranking of specific treatments varied within each of the three sandy soil trial sites.
• In the absence of CL, there was no benefit from using long versus short inclusion plates in year one. However, in year two both the North sites had improved grain yield from the use of long inclusion plates suggesting greater longevity from the inclusion of more top soil.   
• In the first season, spading resulted in a soft soil surface and made seed placement difficult. Consequently, the wheat crop struggled to emerge and impacted crop performance. However, in the second season the soil had consolidated and no issues with seed placement or crop establishment occurred.

• Oats demonstrated the greatest variation in ME between samples, with values ranging from 12.8 to 13.9 MJ ME/ kg DM.
• Due to the greater variation in ME for oats than other cereal grains, testing to determine nutritive values is recommended.
• Average ME at 13.6 MJ ME/ kg DM and protein at 13.2% were high for cereal grains and appeared to be consistent across varieties and between sites.

The risk of stem frost damage can be minimised by using winter wheats if sowing prior to 20 April. Spring wheats should be kept within 5-7 days of their optimal sow date. If appropriate, risk of BYDV should be managed by backing up imidacloprid seed dressing with foliar insecticides at the start of tillering if aphids are present. New winter wheat cultivars are in the pipeline and are likely to have significant yield advantages over current ageing material.

• Analysis of wheat crops sown after rice harvest in the Murray Irrigation Ltd districts (MIL) found that increasing yields required different management depending on soil type and irrigation layout.
• Four management factors that limit winter crop yields were identified: waterlogging, late season water stress, under-fertilisation and low soil pH.
• In the MIL districts alone, increasing wheat yields after rice from the current median to the 80th percentile would result in an additional 20,000–30,000 tonnes per annum ($4–6 million at $200/t).
• If all rice areas were sown to wheat after harvest every year and 80th percentile yields achieved, an additional 128,000–138,000 tonnes of wheat would be produced ($26–$28 million at $200/t).

In South Australia and Victoria, RGT Cesario showed greater resistance to STB and demonstrated smaller yield differences due to the number of fungicide treatments applied. In Tasmania, Anapurna demonstrated intermediate resistance to STB and greater resistance to stripe rust in the early developmental stages with resultant higher yields as a result.

RGT Accroc and Revenue showed a much greater yield response to fungicides than Anapurna and RGT Cesario regardless of site, year, or starting disease pressure, illustrating that genetic resistance to STB was the best tool for reducing fungicide input costs. However, high yields could still be achieved with RGT Accroc, but only with very high fungicide use.

The IDM approach based on two units of fungicide at first - second node (GS31) and flag leaf (GS39) consistently performed slightly poorer than the 4 fungicide program, but this difference was rarely significant in terms of disease pressure or yield, except occasionally with susceptible cultivars, very high disease pressure and higher overall yields. The best result for the 4 unit fungicide program was in very high yielding environments where highly susceptible varieties were being managed for high disease pressure. While the IDM approach has held up well over the two years of this trial, the trial demonstrated that cultivars such as RGT Cesario and Anapurna only have a finite lifespan of genetic resistance to disease (STB resistance of Anapurna declining over the course of the project and RGT Accroc and RGT Cesario showing susceptibility to stripe rust for the first time in 2022).

The economic analysis in appendix iv. informs the following section. In 2021, RGT Cesario had no significant yield difference between fungicide treatments and therefore the gross margins likely declined as greater amounts of fungicides were applied. In 2022, the untreated RGT Cesario did have significantly lower yields than any of the other fungicide treatments that would have justified the use of 1-2 units of fungicides in Millicent and Hagley. The difference on the mainland between untreated RGT Cesario and full protection was 0.97t/ha in Millicent and 1.35t/ha in Gnarwarre. The increase in yield at Gnarwarre with RGT Cesario would have justified using 4 fungicides and did increase the net margins over the untreated, however yields were not significantly different from the 2 unit IDM approach at any site. Therefore overall, the IDM approach is likely to be the best economically viable for RGT Cesario.

Revenue and RGT Accroc had larger responses to fungicide in both years which were greater than the 0.32t/ha required to break even financially when using a full fungicide protection program based on 4 units of fungicide. Fully protected RGT Accroc was the highest yielding variety (6.94t/ha) at Gnarwarre in 2022 that showcased its potential when protected from disease. While this was not the case in other states, there can still be an economic case made for using RGT Accroc in preference to other germplasm if it’s well protected. Revenue responded strongly to fungicide but performed more poorly than all other varieties regardless of the site or the treatment use. The genetic yield potential and resistance of Revenue makes it a weak candidate for variety selection. Anapurna in 2022 was the highest yielding variety (11.12t/ha) at the Hagley site and gave a significant yield response to a full fungicide over the IDM approach in each disease starting point scenario. In contrast, Anapurna performed poorer than RGT Accroc in both Hagley and Gnarwarre in 2021 when stripe rust was not a factor in the trials. Anapurna has lower yield potential than RGT Cesario but its
performance in 2022 held up more strongly relative to other cultivars making it still good candidate to be considered, particularly in Tasmania and SE SA.

The use of flutriafol for STB control did not significantly improve the yield over the standard stubble (untreated with flutriafol) at any site. The long growing season in the high rainfall zone reduced the efficacy of flutriafol treated MAP as the effect of the active ingredient declines at earlier development stages (GS31 – GS33) before the flag leaf develops. However, where stripe rust control
is required flutriafol is key ingredient. In some trials, infected stubble did reduce yield and increased disease pressure relative to the Flutriafol and standard stubble treatments and also illustrated greater yield responses to subsequent follow up foliar fungicides illustrating that wheat on wheat rotation positions potentially increase STB disease pressure.

• Annual medic had lower levels of soil N (kg/ha) remaining in the soil post-harvest compared to balansa clover and subterranean clover at Sherwood.
• Annual ryegrass establishment was greater in crops following wheat, compared to crops following a pasture break crop.
• Overall pasture biomass production was greater at Bordertown compared to Sherwood.
• Wheat yields at Sherwood were greater following balansa clover and subterranean clover, compared to following canola and cereals options, wheat, barley and oats.
• Grain barleys Compass and Rosalind have demonstrated a capacity to produce biomass as a forage or hay option; feed tests need to be considered to ensure they are as favourable as forage options for livestock production.

• Compass and Commander were the least responsive to nitrogen applications.

Intercropping lentil and canola resulted in increased grain productivity at Wudinna, 2019. Intercrop combinations did not over-yield at Warnertown, 2019. Intercropping warrant exploring in low rainfall environments and their potential ancillary benefits, such as increasing groundcover on erosionprone soils, nitrogen fixation, and fodder production as a secondary end use benefit.

• The results presented in this report are from the first year of a three-year study that investigates the effect of break-crop sequences on wheat grain yield. The site was selected due to its high background levels of ryegrass control, and crop rotation treatments have been designed around weed control as the main rotational factor.
• Grain yield was relatively low compared to the growing season rainfall of 253 mm. Grain yield was affected by severe frost that occurred during grain fill.
• This project will continue with the second crop in rotation for the 2017 season, followed by wheat across all plots in 2018 to assess the benefit of a stacked rotation for subsequent wheat grain yield.

The trial will be going into its 3rd year in 2018 and all trial plots will be sown into wheat. The aim is to determine the difference in grain yield for wheat following a range of single or double break crop rotations, compared to continuous wheat. The site was established in 2016 on a paddock that had very high level of ryegrass that was affecting crop production. This area around this trial has been in pasture for 2017 as the comparison farmer solution for the issue.

The trials implemented demonstrated that crops can be successfully established in late winter and early spring when conditions are favourable, with barley yields as high as 7 t/ha harvested at the Munglinup trial site with a late-August sowing date. The trial data also showed that main season and shorter season varieties, for the most part, yielded similar to each other. Results relating to nitrogen treatments were variable, most likely due to the ‘all up front’ application and the leaching that occurred due to above-average rainfall received.

• The effectiveness of the Gamma sensor appears to depend on the geology of the area being surveyed.
• The Gamma sensor appeared to have very good correlations with clay % on the tertiary sediments, but further work is required on the Padthaway formation.

• Iron deficiency is common on rendzinas, peats and coastal calcareous sands in the south east of South Australia .
• Symptoms of deficiency are much greater in wetter than dry years when little deficiency is apparent.
• In field pea the symptoms show up at about the fourth or sixth node stage when the young leaves and growing tip become yellow.
• Soluble ferrous sulphate should be sprayed on to peas at the onset of symptoms.

Starting in September of 2021, the KI Feral Pig Eradication Program is now well into it’s first year. So far, the program has culled over 350 pigs, building on earlier post-fire pig control carried out by the KI Landscape Board.

The use of a Speed tiller to incorporate stubble did not appear to have any negative impacts in the mixed farming systems in the medium rainfall zone in the South-East of South Australia in a very dry season. There was high paddock variability, due to moisture stress, which would have impacted the results.

There were no significant yield differences between the treatments with an average of 1.37 t/ha. There were similar results for the test weights of all treatments but there was a significant difference between the highest – 400mls/ha Amistar Xtra at GS 39 – and the lowest – 250mls Tilt at GS 32.

• Most varieties yielded did not incur yield loss from crop topping at the recommended timing indicating that they were well suited to crop topping at the recommended timing for rye grass control in 2014 where the season finished rapidly due to dry conditions.
• As found in previous seasons there is not always a direct correlation between variety flowering and maturity timing and yield loss due to crop-topping.

• There was a strong crop-top timing response, but limited variation between varieties from crop-topping in 2012. This may be due to below average end-season rainfall, suppressing some yield potential of untreated plots, particularly in later maturing varieties.
• All varieties showed yield loss from crop-topping two weeks prior to the recommended timing. A link between plant maturity and reduced yield was observed at the Early crop topping timing, with earlier maturing varieties showing the least effect and later maturing varieties presenting the greatest effect. At the Recommended timing only two of the later maturing varieties showed any yield loss.

• Dry and hot spring conditions suppressed lentil plant growth at both sites.
• No foliar diseases occurred at either site and hence there was no response to fungicide treatments.
• However, variety and sowing time treatments did have an effect on grain yield and quality at both sites.

• A drier than average growing season in 2012 meant that there was minimal disease in this trial, and grain yield was lower than in previous seasons.
• PBA Flash outyielded Nipper by 23% in this trial, demonstrating its better suitability in shorter seasons and more marginal growing areas compared to Nipper.

• A high level of crop safety exists in PBA Herald XT to both post-sowing pre-emergent (PSPE) and post-emergent (PE) applications of imazethapyr. This high level of crop safety was shown to most but not all of the group B herbicides (e.g. Imi-4).
• Nipper showed up to 100% yield loss in some treatments where tolerant lines showed no yield loss. Nipper incurred yield losses from all herbicide treatments at Pinery but not all at Arthurton. Flumetsulam and single rates of Imazethapyr and Imi-2 were less damaging at Arthurton, but other treatments generally caused similar yield losses between the two sites.

• All varieties behaved similarly for grain yield in response to changes in plant density.
• This result was also found in the 2005 and 2006 trials, and indicates that the current recommended rate of 120 plants per sq.m is adequate for optimising yields at standard sowing dates in the new varieties Boomer and Nipper.
• The effects of sowing time indicate that in some seasons to maximise yields when sowing late plant densities can be increased, however this may not always be economical and in some cases could increase risk of disease.
• Lower rates could also be used when sowing early but
  again this result could vary with seasonal conditions.
