Inverleigh VIC trials

• To evaluate a number of varieties that are either commercially available or close to commercial release that may be suitable for the growing conditions of southern Victoria.
• This trial differs from other comparative crop variety testing in that it evaluates the varieties with a fungicide programme: to determine the yield response of the varieties when controlling leaf diseases.

To compare a number of varieties that are close to commercial release that may be suitable for south west Victoria against five control varieties. This trial differs from other comparative crop variety testing in that it evaluates the varieties with a fungicide programme to determine the yield of the varieties in the absence of foliar leaf diseases, principally stripe and leaf rust.

programme to determine the yield response of the varieties to controlling foliar leaf diseases, principally stripe and leaf rust, against a control of no fungicide.

To evaluate a range of commercially available varieties. 

To evaluate different wheat varieties for yield and grain quality under both a nil foliar fungicide regime and a 3 spray fungicide regime.

This trial is part of a series of experiments evaluating a number of varieties that may be suitable throughout south west Victoria.

To assess different interrow spacing widths using five different sowing treatments.

• To determine the impact of sowing date on wheat yield and grain quality across 20 different wheat varieties.
• To understand how yield and quality is affected by the amount of time spent within the 3 growth stages.

• To determine the interaction of nitrogen timing and dose with plant population in terms of yield, crop structure, predisposition to lodging and quality in the high rainfall zone.
• To determine the influence of nitrogen applied at stem elongation versus up front nitrogen on soil moisture content and dry matter production

To examine the effect of plant growth regulators, in the form of Moddus and Chlormequat on the plant biomass, water use and plant growth in wheat.
 

To investigate the use of water storage crystals as a means of increasing plant available water (PAW) during the grain fill period.

To investigate the feasibility of utilising image data, collected using UAVs, to make timely management decisions relating to slug damage in emerging canola.

To examine how two different plant populations and five different nitrogen timings influence the structure, yield and quality of the barley crop canopy in a first cereal situation.

To examine how two different plant populations and five different nitrogen timings influence the structure, yield and quality of the barley crop canopy in a 1st cereal situation after the break crop.

To examine the interaction between various combinations of nitrogen, sowing rate and grazing to maximise drymatter production and see what impact this has on grain yield and quality and stubble mass post harvest. 

• To evaluate the fit of commonly used and non commercial (dual purpose) canola varieties in Southern Victoria under a range of sowing dates.
• To quantify the yield response of canola to a range of grazing conditions.
• To develop grazing principles for canola in the high rainfall zone.
   

To assess the effect of sowing date on grain yield and quality for some recently released commercial lines along with some experimental lines that could be commercially available within the next 2 years.

To determine the impact of grazing on soil condition and weed populations.  This report is on findings after two years of grazing. 

To identify additional lines with maturity between the spring and winter types by evaluating new canola lines not commercially available to growers which were supplied by six seed companies.

• To evaluate the efficacy of different foliar fungicides against stem rust (Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici) in wheat.
• To account for possible shortages in foliar fungicide supply, products were tested over as wide a rate range as possible (N.B. Use of products and rates lower than label rates in this trial does not constitute a recommendation).

To evaluate a number of varieties that are either commercially available or close to commercial release that may be suitable for the growing conditions of southern Victoria. This trial differs from other comparative crop variety testing in that it evaluates the varieties with a fungicide programme; to determine the yield response of the varieties when controlling leaf diseases against a control, or no foliar fungicide applied. Additionally, the management of inputs in the trial are based on the objective to gain the best margin per hectare.
 

To report on an experiment at Inverleigh, Victoria, investigating the potential for earlier sowing to increase wheat yields in the face of autumn rainfall decline.

To report on the SFS seeder demonstration.

To assess the impact of commercially available seed treatments on wheat yield and quality.

To examine rygrass control in barley using pre-emergent herbicides. 

To summarise the results from this three-year cycle of the Rural Finance Crop Challenge competition.

The aim of the competition is to see which team produces the highest gross margin crop (not necessarily the highest yielding crop) against a background of uncertain input and grain prices and unknown growing season rainfall.

• To assess the potential yield losses when increasing the seed row width for the benefits of subsequent inter-row (no-till) cropping;
• To determine if nitrogen application efficiency can be increased in wider row spacing by applying product in a linear manner.

To investigate the best approach to applying a set amount of nitrogen (100 kg/ha) in order to achieve the greatest grain yield and to maximize quality.
 

To allow grain growers to assess the grain yields of released and upcoming wheat varieties under “with fungicide” and “without fungicide” management regimes.

To determine the influence of cultivar resistance on the cost effectiveness and longevity of upfront disease control, such as seed treatment/in furrow treatments, as opposed to later season control based on foliar fungicides.

To test the vernalisation theory and answer questions around grazing management.
 

To evaluate the most profitable pulse varieties and their associated resistance to diseases faced in the higher rainfall zone of southern Australia.

Two current varieties of field peas and two current varieties of beans were trialled at the Inverleigh site.

To compare Prosaro 420 SC to a local standard treatment and untreated treatment.
 

To test and develop farming systems where retained stubble is managed in the HRZ without a reduction in profitability for the grower

The purpose of these trials was to investigate the value of applying the PGR Moddus EVO to barley grown in the high rainfall zone of Victoria to reduce lodging and improve yields.

To assess the potential of non-commercial later maturing canola lines for the HRZ of southern Australia.

To demonstrate that is possible to grow a viable winter crop and still maintain a productive lucerne stand over summer.
 

With the large majority of wheat cultivars now deemed to be susceptible to stripe rust, in particular the new WA pathotype, this trial was set up to look at economic response to different foliar fungicide timings. In addition the trial continued the evaluation of the strobilurin fungicides (as part of project SFS 00006), the first of which was registered for broad acre cereals in Australia in August 2004 (Amistar Xtra).

These trials taking place in southern Victoria and Tasmania were conducted to examine the response of more disease resistant
varieties to triazole and strobilurin fungicides in the near absence of disease.

The objectives of these trials are very similar to those pursued last season, those being to establish guidelines on the use of foliar applied fungicides in barley crops.
