Increasing plant density is a tool to improve a crop’s competitiveness against weeds. This strategy did not adversely affect the yield of the varieties at the Liebe Main Trial Site in 2012. 

Nitrogen treatments did not significantly influence crop yield however, did influence grain protein. The soil nitrogen levels and season are likely to have influenced this result. Soil testing and understanding the crops requirements as the season unfolds are useful strategies to manage crop performance economically.

The environment is likely to have had the bigger influence on the performance of the varieties than plant density or nitrogen. Growing season rainfall for 2012 was lower than average and disease patches (likely Rhizoctonia) were evident at the trial. The water use efficiency at the site was 13 kg/mm given growing season rainfall (April to October) was 133mm (plus 34mm in January) and grain yields of 1.98 t/ha across whole trial.

• Cobra and Mace were significantly higher yielding than Emu Rock at all seeding densities (P<0.05). There was a yield increase for Emu Rock and Cobra when plant density increased from 83 plants/m2 to 130 plants/m². Further  increases in plant density did not improve or reduced grain yield of these varieties. There was a yield increase for Mace from 130 plants/m2 162 plants/m2. Increasing plant density did not influence grain screenings which were less than 2% for all varieties.
• At Badgingarra, nitrogen application at seeding (14, 30, 60 and 90 kg/ha) did not affect grain yield at either seeding densities (data not provided).   The soil was a red sandy loam with nitrate levels in the top 20 cm of soil at 55mg/kg.   Protein levels in the grain were in excess of 12.5% for all treatments and varieties.  The higher split nitrogen application did significantly increase protein by 0.4% however without a yield increase the late N application was not economical.   This may be a strategy to consider for high yielding varieties such as Mace.  At the higher plant density, and higher yield, Mace had lower protein than Cobra and Emu Rock.  

• Trials in the Condobolin area have shown excellent responses to topdressing in wetter years when the nitrogen requirement of the crop is higher than initially expected.

• In wheat an application rate of 20 kg N/ha in-season was sufficient to achieve the highest yield at Hart in 2017. However, it was the 80 kg/ha treatment which maximised yield and protein to achieve the best return on nitrogen fertiliser invested.
• For barley an application of 40 kg N/ha was adequate to produce the highest yield and quality within the trial.

• Cu and Zn basal in 1957

• There was no increase in wheat (2015) or barley (2016) performance with application of manganese on highly calcareous sands, even though these environments have regularly produced severe Mn deficiency in the past.
• Current industry guidelines still appear to be relevant for diagnosing trace element deficiencies in cereal crops and how they are best managed.

• Current guideline of YEB values at tillering greater than 15mg Mn/kg indicative of adequate status still appear appropriate.
• No yield response recorded to application of Mn in different form or timing.

• Chlorotic and stunted wheat was found to have higher shoot manganese content than healthy plants in the same fields • High values were sometimes associated (correlated) with soil acidity and sometimes with waterlogging.
• In experiments, direct drilling resulted in lower manganese content of wheat, while what following lupin had higher manganese than wheat following wheat.
• Application of lime (0, 2.5 and 5 t/a) to an acid soil (pH 5) reduced the manganese content of wheat from 373, to 135 and 191 ppm respectively.
• On soil from a problem paddock near Rutherglen, application of ammonium sulphate nearly doubles manganese content of Olympic but not Egret wheat, while calcium nitrate reduced manganese in both cultivars.

• Manganese deficiency of wheat decreased the concentration of lignin and phenolic compounds, important precursors to a range of defence mechanisms.
• Reductions in biological defence chemicals are considered to be the primary reason for increased take all infection in zinc deficient plants.

• Manganese deficiency has been identified on light volcanic soils from Mounts Gambier and Schank, and heavy black soils from drained swamps near Penola.
• These soils are alkaline.
• Symptoms first appear as oval dead spots on the second leaf, especially along the margins (not on the first leaf).
• Availability of manganese is reduced in the alkaline soil.
• The deficiency can be cured by the application of manganese sulphate.

• Unusually high manganese concentrations are found in the leaves of manganese tolerant crops.
• We grew these 2 species in solution culture and examine the relationship between manganese and silicon implant tissues.
• Manganese is distributed differently in the leaves of lupin and sunflower.
• In sunflower manganese was found with silicon and calcium in the trichomes and the large vessels of the vascular bundle.
• In lupin the addition of silicon course increasing manganese concentrations in xylem vessels and also in vacuoles of spongy parenchyma.

• There were no significant differences between the varieties for yield with all yielding close to the district average for this season.
• The potential Schooner replacement variety WI 3408 had higher protein than all other varieties and was too high to make malt standards.
• This site was harvested late (January 6, 2004) and produced low test weights. Generally low test weights result from frost or moisture stress although in this instance, rainfall before harvest caused changes in grain size that may have contributed. Low test weights were also observed at the Minyip site, which was also harvested after rain (January 3, 2004).
• While all varieties had low retention and would not have made Malt 1 as a result of this measure alone, WI 3586 had significantly lower retention than all other varieties. This line was expected to be a replacement for Gairdner with improved grain size.
• All varieties had acceptable screenings levels despite low retention.

Mace was the highest yielder with the best grain quality and being a hard variety gave the best gross margin. All other varieties didn’t make their base grade of APW2 with the exception of one Magenta treatment. Adding nitrogen had a negative impact on yields and therefore gross margins with the exception of Magenta 25N, which was able to scrape into a higher bin grade. 

• In a below average rainfall year, with a very dry finish gravelly sands were still highly responsive to applied P, with 0.6 t/ha response to 60 kg/ha P over the last two years and 30 kg/ha applied this year
• Nitrogen in the absence of phosphorus did not significantly increase yield at either site.  This highlights the requirement to get your P rates tailored to your potential at seeding time, as low P rates may limit N response in a good year.
• There was strong correlation between early vigour and grain yield at both sites, again highlighting the need to establish a strong, healthy crop with sufficient early nutrition.
• Increasing plant numbers did not result in increased grain yield on poor sands.
• This trial shows that on variable light country variable rate fertiliser applications would be a useful tool to improve nutrient use efficiency on variable sands, as both sites had significantly different yield potential and nutrient requirement.

Early sowing (15 April) had the largest positive impact on canola yield when comparing a range of treatments trialled in 2014, similar to results observed in 2013. Sowing on 15 April improved yields up to 45%, depending on variety, compared to 13 May sowing date. Good seeding depth and the correct seed rate proved important in maximising canola yield at the sites trialled in 2014, but not to the same extent as time of sowing. Sowing at 4.5 kg/ha at a 2 cm depth gave a 13% yield improvement over sowing at 1.5 kg/ha at 1 cm depth. Achieving approximately 50 plants/m2 of triazine tolerant varieties and 40 plants/m2 of Clearfield tolerant varieties was needed to maximise canola yields in trials conducted at Minnipa Agricultural Centre in 2014. Using farmer retained open pollinated seed did not cause a yield penalty when compared to commercially purchased seed in trials conducted at Minnipa in 2014.

• Early sowing (22 April) had the largest positive impact on canola yield when comparing a range of treatments trialled in 2015, similar to results observed in 2013 and 2014. Sowing on 22 April improved yields up to 12%, depending on variety, compared to 29 April sowing date.
• Different management practices are needed to establish canola on different soil types under marginal moisture conditions. On a loamy soil at Minnipa deeper sowing (to 4 cm) produced the highest yields, whereas shallower sowing (1 cm) produced the highest yields at Piednippie, particularly with the smaller seeded variety Stingray.
• Trials at Piednippie in 2015 showed that yields up to 0.8 t/ha are achievable in a below average rainfall season, provided the crop is established early and achieves around 50 plants/m2 in open-pollinated varieties.
• Results from similar trials in 2013, 2014 and 2015 have all shown that the highest yielding canola has consistently come from plots with plant establishments of over 50 plants/m2 for open pollinated varieties and 40 plants/m2 for hybrid varieties.

• Ripping to 550mm increased yeild in the deep pale sand (Dune) and yellow loamy sand (swale).
• Topsoil slotting, with soil inclusion plates attached to the rear of deep ripper tines, can increase yeild from deep sandy soils more than by deeper ripping alone.
• Deeper ripping with topsoil slotting also helped lessen grain losses from dry and hot spring weather.
• If slotting maintains the de-compaction response longer it will provide very good returnson investment.   

• There is the potential to increase plant dry matter production and grazing using mixtures of plant species.
• Kaspa peas produced the greatest dry matter overall with 1.7 t DM/ha, and an oats/medic mix also did well (1.3 t DM/ha). The short season oats variety, Durack, produced the greatest dry matter for oats with 1.1 t DM/ha. Toreador disc medic (bred for sandy soils) produced the best dry matter (0.75 t DM/ha) amongst the pasture species.
• In a poor season like 2018, dry matter production in pastures could be improved compared to the current district practice of volunteer annual medics.
• Further research needs to be done on regeneration and herbicide tolerance of newer pasture species.

• Average grain yield was higher at Hart in 2011 (2.9t/ha) compared to 2010 (2.5t/ha) and 2009 (2.4t/ha).
• Similarly to previous favourable seasons, no sowing time response was observed in 2011.
• Blackspot severity was low in 2011 because spore release was high prior to sowing and emergence.
• A 4% yield increase was achieved through fungicide applications but this was not economical in 2011.
• Recently released PBA varieties Gunyah, Twilight, Oura and Percy all performed similarly to Kaspa.
• Potential releases OZP0819 and OZP0903 both yielded 8% higher than Kaspa, while Alma was the lowest yielding variety, 7% below Kaspa.

• Grain yield of field peas sown at Hart in 2010 averaged 2.5t/ha across all varieties.
• No time of sowing response was observed in 2010.
• Early sown plots with uncontrolled blackspot showed a 35% yield loss compared to the optimum control (fortnightly chlorothalonil), which yielded 3.6t/ha.
• Prospective releases OZP0703 and OZP0903 show a lot of promise, with OZP0703 performing similarly to Kaspa and OZP0903 yielding 10% greater.
• Chlorothalonil (Bravo), pyraclostrobin (Cabrio) and azoxystrobin plus chlorothalonil (Amistar Opti) increased yields compared to the nil treatment with disease pressure.

There is a difference between maximising biomass and the optimal biomass for maximum yield in a particular environment.

Maximising biomass creates agronomic problems such as increased foliar disease and early weed competition.

Irrigation can supply moisture during grain fill but cannot control the temperature - many of the winter wheats mature too late to avoid heat stress during grain fill. 

There is a difference between maximising biomass and the optimal biomass for maximum yield in a particular environment.

Maximising biomass creates agronomic problems such as increased foliar disease and early weed competition.

Irrigation can supply moisture during grain fill but cannot control the temperature - many of the winter wheats mature too late to avoid heat stress during grain fill. 

• Significant water allocation cuts have forced irrigators to optimise production with the amount of water available.
• The project has an agronomy component and a hydrology component.
• Experiments are located in Whitton, Kerang and Finley.
   

For take home messages in regards to fungicide, nitrogen and growth regular results please see the attached trial report.

In high yielding environment with yield potential around 5 t/ha, Cobra (AH) yielded similar to Mace (AH) in both May and June sowings. New variety Trojan (quality grade not yet known in WA) outyielded Mace by 8% across both time of sowings. Selecting two or three varieties with different traits should help to manage production risks and to achieve yield stability.

• Despite three years of above average rainfall, a red calcareous sandy loam at Minnipa with soil phosphorus reserves of 27 mg/kg of Colwell P has not required any added P fertiliser for maximum cereal grain yields.

A site with high phosphorus (P) reserves needed no applied P fertiliser in 2010 to produce a 2.5 t/ha wheat yield.

• A site with high phosphorus (P) reserves needed no extra P fertiliser to maximise the yield of wheat in 2009 at MAC.

• Due to the dry start to the season, germination across the trial paddock was very uneven, which may have influenced the yield results of the trial.
• It is anticipated that further soil sampling and analysis work will be carried out on this trial in 2009 to look at the residual effect of lime on the soil pH and aluminium toxicity.

The FAST systems economic analysis has provided farmer participants with some useful guidelines to help identify their business potential.

• In year 1 of this experiment, we demonstrated that genetically diverse wheat cultivars performed differently in two locations with varying rainfall patterns. Significant differences in crop biomass, LAI, weed count and biomass between  cultivars was also location dependent. These results show that although weed suppression in wheat is influenced by genotype, the genotypic response in wheat is clearly influenced by environmental factors as well, when it comes to growth, yield and weed suppression. However, certain cultivars were excellent performers in both locations in terms of weed suppression and crop yields and these included Espada and Condo and to a lesser extent Janz. Additional results will be obtained from metabolomic analyses to evaluate both primary and secondary biosynthetic pathways operational in crop genotypes and to determine if these pathways influence weed suppression in either location over time. The role of hydroxamic acids in weed suppression will be further examined in detail through targeted metabolic profiling in both soils and plant tissue. Additional field experiments will be repeated over the next 3 years to determine impacts of year and location upon wheat cultivar performance and weed suppression.

• The trials across agro-ecological zones have highlighted differences between varieties in their ability to respond to a range of production drivers over varied environments and seasons.
• There was no varietal difference between Mace and Trojan at Minnipa with both yielding an average of 1.7 t/ha, and the ungrazed treatment yielded 0.2 t/ha higher than the grazed. There was no difference in grazing response between cultivars.
• Nitrogen (N) can provide assistance in plant recovery through higher yields and grain quality with in-season application of N after grazing.

• The trial is showing clearly that the early years of no tillage come with a significant yield penalty in most treatments.
• This is most significant when coming out of a spray fallow as seen in both the ley/fallow/wheat treatment and the wheat/fallow/wheat treatment.

• Issues such as diseases and weeds are now starting to affect the profitability of the continuous wheat system.
• Minimum tillage needs ideal conditions at sowing to be successful on these soils.
• Seasonal variation has influenced cropping system comparisons, hence the need for the trial to continue into the future.

• Long term gross margin data shows conventional tillage to be more profitable than minimum tillage.
• Long term gross margin data also shows that continuous wheat and rotation l are the most profitable rotations.
• No-tillage into a long fallow situation is significantly less profitable than conventional tillage, by $147.oo/ha. This is not the case with no tillage into a stubble situation which is not significantly different to conventional tillage.
• A major factor determining the profitability of the no tillage treatment is effective weed control.
• The threat of root diseases, such as Rhizoctonia, is now at a high risk level in the continuous wheat rotation, particularly under no tillage, whereas the risk is minimal in other rotations. 

Continuous cropping has remained the most profitable rotation since the trial began, especially continuous wheat. This system however will not last, and will be less profitable in the next few years, as suggested by the GM variations in figures 6 and 7. For continuous cropping to be sustainable, a break crop is needed to keep the system working.

• Proper rotations (irrespective of tillage methods) incorporating no more than two cereal crops in sequence with the addition of either a break crop or a fallow once in every three years is ideal. This rotation allows a very productive and sustainable farming system in our environment.
• The most profitable system since 1999 has been two years of cereal followed by a break crop such as peas under no till.
• No till systems are now becoming more profitable in the trial than cultivated systems under every rotation.
• No till will work on our problem soils so long as effective weed control is achieved.
• Under a continuous cereal rotation, the impact of weeds, diseases, poor nutrition and subsequently lower yields has lowered profitability

• No-till has performed on average 5% higher in yield and increased profits over cultivated farming systems in continuous cropping rotations.
• Adding cultivation to the system has increased both yield and profit in the 18 month fallow rotations.
• Thirteen years of continuous wheat has produced the most grain per hectare, closely followed by a wheat–barley–field pea rotation.

• Soil application of zinc sulphate heptahydrate and zinc oxide increased grain yield of maize when applied in drills near the seed.
• Spray application of zinc also increased yield but to a lesser extent.
• Spray applications of zinc following soil application of zinc sulphate or zinc oxide did not give further yield increases.
• Zinc oxide dusting of seed appears to be a promising remedial technique.

• Applying trace elements at sowing or as a foliar mid-season were equally effective in this particular year.
• Response of wheat plants to DAP with trace elements in the fertiliser compared to other methods for trace element application was variable and needs further investigation.

• No barley varietal differences in tolerance to metribuzin applied either pre-sowing or post-emergent have been detected in 3 years of trials on sandy loam soils at Walpeup and Woomelang.
• Crop damage from metribuzin has been known to occur in some commercial situations so label advice should be adhered to.

• All cultivars gave their highest yield under higher fungicide and nitrogen input (High input management), but cultivars differed in their response to increasing input with Westminster being the least responsive (1.69t/ha increase from low to high input) and Oxford the most responsive (3.09t/ha).
• RGT Planet was the highest yielding cultivar, although its advantage over Westminster was only apparent at higher levels of input, under low input both yielded similarly.
• Disease control resulting from the later fungicide application at GS37 and GS59 was strongly implicated in the yield differences, particularly between low and standard input where there was no difference in N input.
• Disease (net form of net blotch) in Oxford was uncontrollable in this trial even under high input where yield was maximised.
• RGT Planet, RGT Conquest and Westminster showed no significant difference in grain protein across the three management levels, whilst the proteins of Granger and Oxford decreased as yield increased from low to high input.
• Granger and RGT Planet recorded the lowest grain screenings. There was no significant effect of management level on screenings with these two cultivars or Westminster.
• In contrast, Oxford and Conquest that gave the largest responses to higher input showed significant decreases in grain screenings as input was increased.
• The devastating effect of NFNB on Oxford in this HRZ environment was very evident in both yield and screening results. As later fungicide input was removed from the management program so was the yield with significant reductions in yield and increased screenings.
• Under the lowest input RGT Planet and Westminster were significantly higher yielding than other cultivars tested.
• Under the highest input RGT Planet was significantly higher yielding than all other cultivars tested and produced the highest gross margins at each management level.
• With the very high disease pressure in this trial, the higher fungicide input associated with the High Input management made this the most cost effective management program of the Crop Technology Centre trials.
• As a result of higher disease pressure unlike wheat (Protocol 1) higher inputs of fungicide were generally more cost effective in barley sown early, irrespective of cultivar.

Of the malting/food grade varieties evaluated, all varieties were above the required receivable standards for hectolitre weight of 65 kg/hL but protein levels were outside the receivable standard of 9.0 % to 12.0 % for MALT1. Only RGT Planet fell below 12% and although classified as a feed variety for the 2018/2019 season, this variety has received malt accreditation in early March 2019. Yields averaged 3.41 t/ha and were reduced overall compared to 2017. Spartacus CL was the highest yielding (3.83 t/ha) closely followed by Rosalind (3.81 t/ha) and RGT Planet (3.79 t/ha) but as in 2017, yields were not significantly different

The importance of reviewing long term data when making varietal choices was evident at both Sherwood and Frances.
Some varieties yielded well in both 2016 and 2017 demonstrating their ability to perform well under different seasonal conditions in
the environments at the respective sites. The Frances site was sown on 16 May 2017. All varieties except
Westminster were F1 classification. Of the malting/food grade varieties evaluated, Buloke, Compass and Commander were below the required receivable standards for hectolitre weight of 65 kg/hL whilst Westminster protein level was outside the receivable standard of 9.0 % to 12.0 % for MALT1 and would have been MALT COMP. Rosalind, a new feed barley, has the potential to yield well in high rainfall environments. As in 2016, Rosalind was the highest yielding (6.18 t/ha) but in 2017 yields did not differ significantly between varieties at Frances (Table 1).

The Sherwood site was sown on 19 May. Yields ranged from 3.10 to 4.74 t/ha (Table 2) and were reduced overall compared to the
2016 season where more favourable growing conditions prevailed throughout the season. All varieties were feed quality due to the
high protein levels. RGT Planet, a new variety evaluated for the first time at Sherwood, showed its potential being the highest
yielding variety (4.74 t/ha) outperforming all other varieties. Rosalind, a new feed barley, that has demonstrated broad adaption, followed closely yielding 4.16 t/ha. Compass and Spartacus CL have recently received malt accreditation in March 2018; as segregation is an issue for malting barley it is important growers ascertain if the variety chosen is able to be stored and marketed in your area.

The importance of reviewing long term data was evident at Conmurra with the mid-late maturing varieties being the
highest yielding (Table 1), in contrast to 2015 results when Bass, Commander and Compass were in the top four yield performers.
The Julian Day measurement (the day of the year that 50 % of the plants are flowering) has been included for the Conmurra site, and shows that those varieties that had a longer growing season (> 280 Julian Days) were the varieties that achieved the site mean (5.96 t/ha) or greater. The new varieties from Elders; Alestar (medium-long season), Maltstar (long season) and the experimental line SMBA-4557A (medium-long season) all performed well at Conmurra.

• Two Mackillop Farm Management Group trials were sown to evaluate two BYDV management options across four wheat varieties.
• High Rainfall zone growers should be pro-active and develop a BYDV management plan.
• Up to date disease guides should be consulted when selecting varieties.
• Growers are encouraged to check for aphids regularly, especially early in the season.

The treatments resulted in no difference in yield, protein or oil content at Millicent.

There are no NVT Canola sites in the lower South East and MFMG growers identified that it was important to evaluate canola varieties in the high rainfall zone of the South East. 

The long season winter canola varieties require a vernalisation period (cold requirement) before they become reproductive and
bud elongation starts to occur. This gives these varieties the ability to be sown early and then grazed without significantly affecting
grain yields. In 2016, three winter canola varieties were sown at Conmurra. They were sown at the same time as the spring sown
canola variety trials, and as a result, their full yield potential has not been achieved (Table 3). To try and maximise the benefits,
need to be prepared to sow early. There was no significant difference in yield between the three varieties sown.

• MFMG funded variety trials at Conmurra and Millicent on high yield potential wheat and barley lines.
• Released cultivars and experimental lines were evaluated.
• This trial provided growers the opportunity to increase their knowledge on the management and performance of high yield potential wheat and barley varieties for the high rainfall zone (HRZ).
• Trial planning for 2018 is underway focusing on elite lines.

• Trial work in other states suggests plant growth regulators (PGR’s) can manipulate plant architecture in early sown cereal crops.
• MFMG funded PGR trials at Conmurra and Millicent on wheat and barley.
• The application of PGR’s on wheat increased yield overall at Conmurra, but did not alter plant architecture, flowering or grain quality.
• This trial provided growers the opportunity to increase their knowledge on the use of PGR’s.

No grain yield or quality differences for the dual purpose wheat Manning were observed at Millicent with additional N and S treatments.

 With four distinctly different seasons, the results reiterate the importance of reviewing long-term data when making varietal choices.

• MFMG and SARDI funded a wheat nutrition (Granular vs. Liquid) scoping study at three sites (Sherwood, Frances and Conmurra).
• The aim was to evaluate wheat production with either granular or liquid fertiliser inputs.
• Planning is underway to expand this study in 2019 and an application for additional funding submitted.

The Sherwood trial (Table 2) benefited from a long growing season and mild spring conditions with the mid-late maturing variety Trojan being the highest yielding variety (6.91 t/ha). Beckhom and Scepter followed closely (6.78 t/ha and 6.73 t/ha respectively). Both of these mid-season varieties also performed in the best at Sherwood in 2015, demonstrating their ability to perform in this environment under different seasonal conditions.

• MFMG funded variety trials at Sherwood and Frances to enable growers to evaluate a selected number of varieties under specific local conditions. 
• Varieties included released cultivars and experimental lines. 
• At Sherwood, the AH varieties Scepter (5.59 t/ha), Vixen (2018 release; 5.56 t/ha) and RockStar (2019 release; 5.33 t/ha) were the highest yielding. 
• At Frances, Scepter (7.23 t/ha), recent releases Vixen (7.12 t/ha), RockStar (7.02 t/ha) and Sheriff CL Plus (6.63 t/ha) and the experimental line LPB15-2485* (6.47 t/ha) were the highest yielding. 
• At both sites, some AH varieties failed to reach the minimum protein level required to achieve maximum grade. 

Neither zinc, boron, copper or molybdenum applied to wheat on these two sites showed any significant effect on grain yield. The late application of zinc increased grain Zn content, but no other nutrient concentrations were noted due to the application of micronutrients.

On these two sites, the addition of copper or zinc supplements to MAP had no effect on grain yield or grain Cu or Zn content. Based on the soil test, the Horsham site could have been considered marginal for Cu, but Zn levels were not considered limiting. Soil tests for micronutrients are unreliable and diagnosis of paddocks where crops can benefit from micronutrient supplements is also unpredictable.

The applied micronutrients had no effect on grain yield or nutrient concentration.

• A literature review of micronutrient limitations to nodulation and N2 fixation in tropical legume crops.

• During the extremely dry 2006 season the addition of micronutrients had no significant effect on crop performance and there was no benefit, in terms of grain yield, from the application of nitrogen, regardless of product.
• There is no benefit to apply micronutrients when levels are adequate at GS30 and when there is a good history of applications.

• Wheat grown on highly calcareous soils responded to zinc and manganese applications.
• Micronutrients were most effective when they were applied in fluid form which provided economical responses.
• There was no grain yield response when granular micronutrients were applied as a dry blend with granular NP fertiliser or as a coating on granules.

Mid-row banding nitrogen at 133 kgN.ha⁻¹ gave a similar response to topdressing the same rate at GS31. It increased yield by 1.38 t/ha and grain N by 38 kgN.ha⁻¹ to give an ANRE of 30%. Mid-row banded N created a highly-concentrated band of ammonium which appeared to mostly survive a water-logging event.

Mid-row banding N appears to be a valid application method for nitrogen in a southern Riverina irrigated context, allowing all nitrogen requirements to be placed in the soil at sowing. This is applicable where a higher yield potential is known with some confidence, and seeding equipment can handle larger amounts of fertilizer at sowing. Hence, it may also be a useful technique in higher rainfall zones, where yield potential is high and waterlogging is more common.

On heavier soil types with higher levels of organic matter, using a speed tiller to incorporate a wheat stubble may assist in increasing canola yields. If incorporation occurs immediately post-harvest, then the addition of nitrogen may not be required if the soil nitrogen levels are adequate. If incorporation is delayed and occurs immediately prior to sowing, then the addition of nitrogen should be considered.

Bannister was the highest yileding variety from either sowing date.

• Yields were excellent considering the dry (T/ha)  conditions during early spring.
• No frost damage occurred and while leaf rust was present on all varieties (except Goldmark) it did not appear to affect the yield greatly. 
• Weather damage occurred due to the rain that fell in late December, with Goldmark and Rosella appearing to be the worst affected.
• To date, grain quality evaluation has not occurred. 

• Molybdenum fertiliser increased wheat grain yield in 2 of 5 years and grain weight in 3 of 5 years, indicating a deficiency of molybdenum in the soil.
• Manganese concentration in wheat grain was high but was greatly reduced following liming.

• Grazing did not change grain yield or quality. Rather, moisture stress was more important in a dry finish
• In a dry year, the ratio of grain yield to crop biomass at flowering is 0.40. In an average year it is around 0.55
• Grazing slows crop maturity by one to two weeks, which meant Revenue (long season variety) was still booting during the October heat wave 

• District Practice beat the farmers for grain yield and profit!
• Researchers may blitz the field yet, just watch this space…
• Oh, and by the way, the farmers are still winning, just.

• A comparison of 2001 and 2010 soil analysis suggests that organic carbon levels may have declined over the 9 year competition, irrespective of the rotation utilised and production achieved.
• However to suggest that there is a continuing long term decline in soil health in the face of improved “sustainable” farming techniques is premature.
• The competition ceased in its current form in 2010 with all paddocks sown to an oilseed (canola or juncea).

• Depending on seasonal influence, stored soil moisture, soil nutrition, stocking rate management and correct timing (early tillering at growth stage (GS) 18-22, rather than later tillering at GS 24-28), grazing can be done with no detriment to crop yield.
• However, preceding paddock history had a significant impact on subsequent crop success and needs to be considered when planning future rotations.

• The repeated Gairdner control plots showed variation across the site and therefore it is difficult to draw conclusions from this data.
• All varieties yielded well – especially given the below average growing season rainfall.
• All varieties had low test weight. Low test weights were also observed at the Marnoo site. The Minyip and Marnoo sites both had lower growing season rainfall and had grain discolouration as a result of rain damage before harvest, compared to the Rupanyup sites. These factors may have contributed to low test weights at the Minyip & Marnoo sites (harvested January 3 and January 6, 2004 respectively). 
• All varieties had protein levels above the malt receival standards of 12%. The high protein coupled with high yields at this site suggests high soil nitrogen levels.

• Hyola 60 was the highest yielding variety by a small margin.
• Pioneer45C05 and Pioneer 44C11. These are early maturing conventional varieties suited to the northern Wimmera and southern Mallee respectively. They may have a place for late sowing in medium to high rainfall districts.
• Within the top performing varieties at this site, there was a mix of varieties with conventional blackleg resistance and those containing resistance derived from Brassica sylvestris. This demonstrates that there are high yielding alternatives to B. sylvestris varieties, suited to this district, which carry a very much reduced risk of blackleg resistance breakdown. For example; ATRBeacon is an excellent early-mid season option with triazine tolerance, however it carries a blackleg rating of 6.5, so should be treated with Jockey if sowing in high rainfall areas.
• Although AVSapphire had significantly higher protein than other varieties tested, with 25.1%, all varieties had oil contents above 40% at this site.
