• Canola trials during 2012 had high plant populations, which may have created atypical crop canopy structures in relation to different row spacings.
• In four canola datasets generated from 2009 – 2012 at Coreen, New South Wales and Bungeet, Victoria the influence of row spacing on yield has been inconsistent.
• During 2012, the narrow row spacing (22.5cm) produced higher yields and a higher harvest index (HI) than wider row spacing, however this has not been the case in previous years. 

• Of the conventional varieties: Outback (1.2t/ha), Emblem (1.1t/ha) and Rivette (1.3t/ha) performed the best at Berriwillock in 2003.
• The triazine tolerant (TT) lines that yielded highest in this trial were Surpass501TT (1.1t/ha) and Beacon (1.0t/ha). Eyre, a TT variety performed poorly at 0.7t/ha.
• The Clearfield line that performed very well in the trial was Pioneer 45C75 (1.3t/ha).
• In the Wimmera, monola is worth keeping an eye on as a niche crop as it performed similar to, if not slightly better, than some canola varieties and receives a premium of $40/t on delivery.

• Starter application of P was important in maximising yields at GS30.
• Grain yield responses (< 90 percent relative yield) to P were obtained for 35 percent of the paddocks surveyed.
• DGT accurately predicted wheat responses to P accounting for 64 percent and 79 percent of the variation in early dry matter and grain respectively.
• Colwell P could only explain 36 percent of the variation in early dry matter and no significant relationship could be obtained with grain.
• Colwell P plus the Phosphorus Buffering Index (PBI) correctly predicted wheat response in 60 percent of the sites.

• With 537mm growing season rainfall (April- mid-November) wheat yields followig faba beans were 2.2t/ha higher than those experienced in 2009.
• The yield reduction moving from a narrow row spacing (22.5cm) to wide (37cm) was 12% (0.64t/ha), compared with 16% (0.49t/ha) in 2009.

• With 570mm growing season rainfall (GSR) 2010 wheat yeilds were more than double those experiences during 2009 in the same rotation position (wheat after canola).
• Yield drop-off associated with the wide row spacing (37.5cm) was almost identical to 2009 results, with a 12% yield reduction compared with the narrow row spacing.

• In the 2012 wheat after canola trial, moving from a narrow row spacing (22.5cm) to a 30cm spacing reduced yield by 9%.  Moving from 22.5cm to the widest (37.5cm) row spacing reduced yield by 11%.
• In a season where yields averaged about 3t/ ha overall (based on a GSR of 196mm plus 85mm stored soil moisture), increasing row spacing beyond 22.5cm significantly reduced yield.
• During 2009, in the same rotation position on the same trial site, there was no difference in yield between the 22.5cm and 30cm row spacings (based on 2.5t/ha average yields), although the 37.5cm row spacing still yielded significantly less.

• In second wheat after faba beans, moving from a narrow row spacing of 22.5cm to 30cm and 37.5cm row spacings reduced yield by 4% and 10% respectively.  This compares with respective yield reductions of 12% and 14% in the fi rst wheat trial grown in the same paddock at the same time.
• The narrow row spacing (22.5cm) produced greater biomass than the wider row spacing but had a relatively poor harvest index (26%) compared with other row spacings in this trial.
• There was no difference in crop establishment or yield due to drill opener (tine versus disc), however plant establishment was superior with the narrow row compared with the wider spacings tested.
   

• Gauntlet wheat sown as the second wheat crop after canola yielded between 3.84–4.44t/ha with 232mm of growing season rainfall (Apr-Oct) and an estimated 118mm of stored water at sowing (total 350mm).
• Moving from a narrow row spacing (22.5cm) to 30cm and 37.5cm row spacings reduced yield by 13% and 11% respectively in the 2012 season.  In 2011, moving from a 22.5cm spacing to 30cm and 37.5cm spacings reduced yield by 4% and 10% respectively for the second wheat trial grown in the same paddock.
• It was estimated that the narrow row spacing (22.5cm) resulted in better water use efficiency (WUE) than the widest spacing (37.5cm), despite having a lower harvest index (44% vs 47%) than the widest rows.  

• Wheat on wheat (following canola) yielded 4.91t/ha, almost 1t/ha less than the neighbouring first wheat trial after canola, which yielded 5.84t/ha.
• There was no yield drop-off associated with wider row spacings (30cm and 337.5cm) in this wheat-on-wheat situation.

• Plant establishment at a 22.5cm row spacing was signifi cantly superior to 30cm, which in turn was signifi cantly higher than 37.5cm. The disc drill opener gave better establishment than the tine at the narrow (22.5cm) row spacing but not at the wider row spacing. 
• Advantages with the narrow row spacing were seen early in the season in terms of plant population, dry matter (DM) and tiller production. These advantages did not translate to signifi cantly higher yield in this rotation position. This result was identical to the results of the 2010 trial when wheat on wheat yields showed a similar, but not signifi cant, trend for narrow row spacing (22.5cm) to be better than wide row spacing (37.5cm). 

Wheat yields in 1997 were generally below average to average across the Wimmera, Mallee, Central and North Eastern cropping zones.

• Trial sown at Lameroo on a zinc deficient soil, very dry season.
• Untreated crop was severely zinc deficient.
• Zinc seed dressings (Teprosyn and Broadacre products) were effective at alleviating zinc deficiency but not as effective as the dressings plus mid season foliar spray.
• The soil sprays were not very effective, even at double the recommended rate, perhaps because the soil was so dry.
• Although laboratory experiments had shown that MAP was more effective than DAP fertiliser in terms of zinc availability, no differences were observed in the field experiment.

• Wet conditions from June to September resulted in high levels of petal infestation.
• High-disease-risk districts were identified as having high intensity canola production, reliable spring rainfall (particularly during flowering) and long flowering periods.
• Petal infestation levels were similar to that of 2015, but above average rainfall in August and September in southern NSW and northern Victoria favoured sclerotinia stem rot development.

Agronomists and farmers throughout the Glenthompson region appreciate the presence of potassium deficinancy, however little has been done to understand the spatial distribution across the landscape. This demonstration trial has utilised a range of spatial technologies, strategic soil sampling and local knowledge to determine opportunites for variable rate potash.

• Canola varieties differ in their flowering times depending on when they are sown. Sowing a variety too early can lead to flowering when the risks of frost and disease are high; sowing a variety too late can lead to heat or moisture stress.
• Matching a variety’s phenology to its sowing time is critical for flowering to start during the optimum flowering period for that region, which is when environmental and disease risks are balanced for the highest yield potential. More information on sowing windows to suit variety phenology can be found in the DPI’s Winter crop variety sowing guide 2020.
• Previous research has shown that the time from sowing to the start of flowering could be different in any one year in response to temperature and solar radiation.
• This phenology experiment will be repeated in 2020 with a slightly different variety set, including a number of unreleased lines that are also in the National Variety Trials (NVT).

Phenoxy herbicide rates and application times are generally based on crop leaf number. This however, does not take into account the fact that varieties with different maturity lengths will differ in leaf number ie. shorter season wheats generally produce less leaves than long season wheats.

SANTFA’s 2010 field trial in calcareous cropping country near Streaky Bay demonstrated the strongest evidence  yet for biochar’s capacity to influence fertiliser efficacy and crop yield in SA’s cropping system.

The biochar data collected from the 2010 trials is analogous in many ways to what we would expect from spreading clay on non-wetting sands: little response at very low rates, an excellent response at the appropriate rate and a potential problem if the soil is over-clayed or the wrong clay (such as a limey clay) is applied. 

Low rates of bandxed biochar have some influence on DAP efficacy however biochar spread, or banded without DAP reduced yield.

Biochar is not a fertilser in it's own right.
At low rates, the banding of biochar may improve DAP efficacy in wheat.

• Banding low rates of biochar can reduce cropping input costs and improve profi tability.  
• Biochar can improve the effi cacy of fertiliser but should not be regarded as a fertiliser in its own right.
• More is not better. A rate of around 35kg/ha of biochar plus a modest rate of DAP produced the best economic outcome for all rates of DAP used in the trial (0, 50 and 100kg/ha). 

A significatn yield increase was observed on the Barber site from the application of 10kg P/ha compared with the zero and 5kg P/ha treatments.

• Different crop types displayed varying phosphorus (P) use efficiencies (soil and fertiliser demand) under P deficient conditions.
• Crop types that have previously shown to be P efficient did not display the same traits in neutral to slightly alkaline soils.
• Soil testing can have significant economic benefits if the right test is used.

• Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant development which cannot be effectively applied post sowing. Because of this it is imperative that decisions on its application are made now.
• P should be applied at rates necessary achieve the yields being targeted in a given paddock for a given year.
• Information to assist you in determining how much P is in your soil includes fertiliser history, removal through production previous yields, soil tests and paddock history.

Low rainfall limited yield and subsoil compation was identified as a major constraint at this site.

• Early observations of crop vigour (11th July) found that the 0P plots at all rates of nitrogen were significantly less vigorous than the plots that had phosphorus applied, with the plants in the highest rates of P applied showing the highest vigour.
• This response to applied P was still evident at the later observations of crop vigour on 8th August. This demonstrates the need to apply fresh phosphorus to crops at seeding to ensure good plant shoot and root growth during the early stages of crop growth.

• Hi-analysis granular fertiliser required the smallest yield to breakeven in 2009 .
• Hi-analysis granular P and liquid P had a similar response curve and both types of products performed well.
• Rock Phosphate product had a very flat response which slightly improved when 30% DAP was added.

The Rand site was sown on the 12th May 2010 with 8 treatments of various amounts of seed and P fertilizer. The variety was Lincoln and the sowing fertilizer was MAP. The site had grown canola in 2009 and had been summer sprayed for weeds. It was direct drilled into the canola stubble. The site had an N rich strip of 50hg/.ha of N applied about 5 weeks prior to the assessment in July 2010.

• In this district and in reference to the soils that are low in exchangeable aluminium – that is to say the soils where barley, canola and lucerne can realise their water limited yield potentials without the need for the application of lime, that negligible quantities of phosphorus are lost to the soil pool. The
• It is stressed that after 2007 you should apply at least the usual recommended phosphate rate to your 2008 wheat crops to achieve their water-limited yield potential

• In 2003, a three week delay in sowing after mid/late May resulted in a 0.3t/ha (Murtoa) and 0.5t/ha (Birchip) yield penalty.
• Further delay in sowing (to July) caused similar decreases in yield.

 

The objective of this GRDC / SPAA funded project is to increase the level of adoption of PA 'beyond guidance' by broadacre farmers. The project specifically aims to increase the level of adoption of variable rate (VR) by growers in the project to 30% by 2013.This goal will be achieved by demonstrating how to use PA tools to growers at a regional level and by increasing the skills of growers and industry in PA to a level where they can then use PA tools in their farming systems to achieve economic, environmental and social benefits.

The addition of any form of phosphorus did not increase grain yield.

Phosphorus treatment had no significant impact on grain yield, screenings or protein at Hart in 2008.

• A response to fertiliser after 5 years of no phosphorus applications.
• Alternative phosphorus sources such as biosolids, chicken litter or biochar, produced significantly lower yields compared to phosphorus fertiliser.
• Biosolids and chicken litter significantly increased leaf and grain zinc concentrations.

• A response to fertiliser after 5 years of no phosphorus applications.

There was a significant yield response to 0 P rates again in year four at Ariah Park.

• Results from this trial indicate that on large areas (85%) of the paddock P rates could be cut significantly with no loss of yield in the short term.
• However, this will lead to a decline in P reserves and yield losses would be expected in future years.

The grower mentioned the importance of correctly identifying the GPS coordinate locations to get reliable soil type information. Yield maps provided showing areas of the paddock with high and low potential assisted this process. Soil analysis verified the trends produced by the yield map.

The apparent better performance of MAP T3 is noted but when looking at the other MAP based products they don't follow the same trend. There was no significant response to applied phosphorus, sulphur or zinc. The CV of the trial is quite high, meaning that a 0.48 Tonnes/ha yield response was needed for anything to be significant. There was no negative effect of applying starter nitrogen in this trial, however there was no positive effect. At current pricing the MAP based products are a very cost effective source of phosphorus and sulphur regardless of the starter nitrogen. Tissue tests indicated all nutrients were adequate see Table 99.
 

• Soil test results indicated that the P levels on the trial site were not particularly low.
• Despite the dry conditions in September, grain yields ranged from 1.59 to 2.16 t/ha.
• Results demonstrate that application of P up to 40 kg P/ha can increase field pea yields. To maximise grain yield, P rates above 40 kg/ha may be needed.

• A pot study using 32 virgin soils from south-eastern Australia (Vic - Qld).
• Subclover grown in pots in the glasshouse and nutrient relations examined.
• Sulphur deficiency occurred almost as frequently as phosphorus deficiency.
• 75% of the soils were deficient in both phosphorus and sulphur, 31% were deficient in all three elements.
• Molybdenum responses were obtained only after the other deficiencies had been corrected.
• A deficiency in one of the elements is no indication of deficiency or sufficiency of either of the other two.
• Responses to phosphorus were less on the black earths than on the red or yellow podzolic soils; those on the red earths were intermediate.
• The intensity of sulphur deficiency increased, and the intensity of molybdenum deficiency decreased, with increasing soil pH.

• The production and farm management lessons learned during the project will be made available to the KI farming community and wider South Australia through a range of information events, including field days, offered during the project and at the conclusion of the programme.

• On light soils, nitrogen is generally the most important nutrient in achieveing optimum cereal yields and maximising return.
• It is important to maintain a balanced approach to crop nutrition.
• In deficient sandy soils, nitrogen can be confidently applied to malting barley, particularly if applied early and to crops free of disease and weed competition.

• During 1997 make the most of the technology and services available.
• Soil testing prior to sowing.
• Monitoring your crops with sap nitrate testing, NIR analysis, plant tissue and grain tissue testing during the season will enable you to make informed decisions and to capitalise on the opportunities presented.

Previous trials and demonstrations have highlighted zinc deficiencies in both cereals and pulses, which could provide farmers substantial profits over the cost of zinc. A trial conducted on wheat at Sea Lake in 2000, on a highly responsive soil type with a poor zinc history clearly defined responses to zinc and demonstrated that responses to phosphorus or nitrogen cannot be achieved if zinc is deficient. This trial also endorsed the conclusions of trials conducted in 1999 that adequate zinc enriched granular fertiliser should be regularly applied

The 2002 season has failed for many cropping farmers in the north-west of the State. Some will harvest seed, but in many areas even that will not be possible. It is now time to start planning for 2003 to minimise the risks of failed crops in the coming season. Assuming that it will rain next year, we must ensure that we have the right cropping mix, that there is no legacy of residual herbicides and no cost blow outs.

Throughout the eastern Australian grain belt the 1994 season has now been confirmed as one of the worst Winter growing seasons ever.

• This project has had a large impact on Albany and Esperance growers.
• The underrepresented soil types are now predominantly covered making the Yield Prophet project more relevant to the area.
• Growers can access the information in the paddock on smart phones and tablets.
• This enables them to make better informed decisions when it comes to soil inputs and management.

• Birds preferentially attacked low density treatments and late maturing variety Hyola 450TT.
• The results from this site should be treated with caution.

 

• Grain yields of most canola varieties at Salmon Gums started to plateau at ~ 20 plants/m²
• Taking into account the costs of increasing plant density we calculated the economic optimum for higher cost seed types such as RR and hybrid TT to be 25 plants/m² or less
• Hyola 404RR had the flattest response indicating its yields were less affected by lower plant densities.

• RR hybrid canola maximised gross margins
• OP TT variety Sturt produced similar gross margins to the hybrid TT variety Hyola 450 TT
• Gross margins were optimised at:

             ~ 50 plants/m² for Sturt TT.

                5 to 25 plants/m² for Hyola 450TT.

              ~ 13 plants/m² for Pioneer 43Y23 RR.

 

In this 2013 trial:

• Canola yield responded to increasing plant density to 65 plants/m² but there was very little response at densities greater than 20 to 30 plants/m²
• The response was variable within this trial site, which means that is very likely to be quite variable across different years and locations. 
• Roundup Ready canola enabled much better weed control than triazine tolerant canola on this site.

In stressed conditions canola yields and gross margins were reduced at plant densities above 20 plants/m².

Despite being higher yielding and producing higher oil than CB Telfer TT, the higher seed costs of hybrid triazine tolerant variety Hyola 450TT resulted in lower gross margins.

Hybrid RoundupReady cultivar Hyola 404RR produced the highest yields and oil at Mullewa in 2013. 

Despite higher upfront costs Hyola 404RR also produced the highest gross margins.

At Chapman Valley in 2013 canola grain yields began to plateau at approximately 20-30 plants/m².  Economic optimum target densities were found to be @ 16 plants/m² for Hyola 404RR, 24 plants/m² for GT Viper, 33 plants/m² for Hyola 450TT, and 34 plants/m² for ATR Stingray.

Taking into account contingencies such as seeding errors, dry conditions at seeding and changes in seed size or viability we suggest that seed rates of RR and TT hybrids and RR OP at similar sites be around 1.9 to 2.3 kg/ha, whilst the cheaper seed of less competitive TT OP lines be sown at @ 4.0 kg/ha.

It was hypothesised that the benefits of the growth regulants would be related to the amount of crop growth. It was expected they would have a greater beneficial impact where the crop was identified as being thick and bulky, according to the aerial imagery and that the effects would be less or negative where crop growth was less and possibly already constrained by other factors such as nutrition. If this hypothesis were correct, crop imagery could be used to target growth regulants to areas where a positive response is most likely. There was lower NDVI at the southern end of Ronnies paddock, and this is where a negative yield response was observed, indicating the hypothesis may be correct, however the link is not strong.

Yield differences between treatments were highly significant. Differences observed between the growth regulant treatments and nil were up to 0.5t/ha along the trial strip. The yield differences were not significant at the northern end of the trial strips, this is where localised waterlogging was observed in the trial and crop growth was reduced before the growth regulants were applied, as observed in the crop spec data.

• Application of PGRs significantly reduced plant height and increased grain yield at Hart in 2013.

In 2014 – a dry season with limited growth and yield at the trial site – Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) were not economically viable or worthwhile.

PGR use in a tough season may pose more risk than benefit to cereal crops; their use should be gauged on seasonal outlooks.

In 2014, reduction in plant height was greatest with a PGR applied either as a single late, or a split application, not an early application.

The combination of a fungicide such as Amistar Xtra with a PGR such as Moddus Evo, appears to increase the effect of the PGR on plant growth.

• Plant growth regulators had no significant impact on wheat grain yield.
• The only grain quality parameter to be influenced by PGR or nitrogen application was grain protein.

• Plant growth regulators had no significant impact on wheat grain yield in 2012, at four different sites.
• Plant growth regulators can reduce grain yield and quality with incorrect application timing, especially to crops under stress i.e dry, nutrient deficient, frost, waterlogging.

• Moddus Evo reduces lodging and can increase yields
• Application timing and concentration of Moddus Evo is critical
• Moddus Evo should not be applied to plants under stress
• Moddus Evo has improved formulation stability and plant uptake

The key message that came out of these trials is that despite the lack of lodging, a Moddus application at 400ml/ha applied at GS31, with or without a second application of Moddus at 200ml/ha at GS37, had a beneficial effect on yield and reduced crop height. These results are supported by previous research on PGR use in cereals.

Conventional broad acre fungicides, biological products and products for home gardening were all tested. Unfortunately the dry season reduced incidence of diseases and gave no clear indication of the value of these products.

• Bidgee and Djakal performed best at 45 plants/m2.
• N005A-80 and Snowy performed best at 30 plants/m2.
• Severe lodging occurred in all varieties at the 60 plants/m2 sowing density.
• Snowy has poor resistance to lodging, which was exacerbated at higher sowing densities.

Late application and/or higher rates of clethodim pose a high risk to canola yields. Split applications at lower rates do not appear to cause as much damage as a single higher rate. Varieties appear to differ in their tolerance of high rates, but further investigation is required.

• This demonstration suggests that there is a trend towards higher yields as a result of ploughing stubbles.
• The cost of ploughing stubbles is relatively low and it may be an effective way to increase soil organic matter.

PodGuard is a trait which strengthens what is known as the indehiscent zone of a canola pod, the area which naturally bvreaks open to allow shattering to occur.  The trait has been shown across 10 years of trialling to greatly reduce the incidence, risk and severity of shaqttering in varieties bred to contain Pod Guard. IH51RR is the first commercial variety with PodGuard, and grower-scale trialling in 2014 showed that the trait has a number of applications for growers.

• Plant numbers were variable and it is difficult to draw any conclusion from the final grain yields.
• The untreated strip yielded 1.8t/Ha. Both the PAM treatments were assessed as 1.9t/Ha, and the Irrigator soil wetter yield was 2.0t/Ha.
• This was what the remainder of the paddock yielded, and it was treated with Irrigator.

The polymer coated canola had very poor germination, even after 60 mm of rainfall in the month post sowing. More work needs to be done on the coating thickness and cost before polymer coating could be considered as an early sowing tool in our growing conditions.

• Biodegradable polymer films retain soil moisture and increase soil temperature.
• Polymers allow crops to be grown out of season and expand the planting window.
• Sorghum and millet successfully germinated under the film failed to germinate in the absence of the film.

• This trial is a joint project between the Birchip Cropping Group (BCG), the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Polymers and Integrated Packaging.
• Due to seasonal conditions there were no yield or quality results obtained from this trial in 2006.

• Field data from 2007, as well as modelling data, has shown that there is an optimum time to remove the polymer film before it gets too hot under the film resulting in a reduction in yield.
• A low cost structure is required to make polymer film economically viable, however there seems to be good initial results when using polymers to establish native tree species. There is potential that polymer film may have a future with perennial species (salt bush establishment etc) more so than with annual species due to the high cost of laying the film each year with annual crops.

• Due to the dry season yeilds were very dissapointing, 0.2-0.3t/ha, and there was no response to fertiliser. Results were not printed in the report.

• Compared to the pre-emergent ryegrass control trial, conducted alongside, the post emergent application results were very poor, below 60% control.
• Boxer Gold applied post sowing pre-emergence at either 1.5 or 2.5 L/ha produced the greatest in-row ryegrass control (78%).

• Preliminary results have shown that post sowing use of some pre-emergence herbicides can improve control of late emerging ryegrass and could be beneficial as a late salvage exercise where ryegrass has escaped earlier control.
• Although no damage to the wheat crop was observed, these treatments present a higher risk to crop safety, depending on soil type and rainfall after application.
• Post sowing use of these herbicides is currently off label & requires further investigation before registration can be granted.

• It is difficult to effectively control witch grass in summer.
• No single herbicide treatment achieved 100% control.
• Glyphosate-based herbicide treatments were the best performers, achieving 86–88% control.
• The mixture of glyphosate + simazine had residual control on subsequent emergences.

Broadstrike Herbicide with or without wetter and Broadstrike + Brodal all provided commercially acceptable control of wild cabbage in lentils without causing crop damage. Warm, sunny conditions at spraying resulted in good Broadstrike activity. The late finish to the growing season also suited Broadstrike mixes, as the delay in crop maturity resulting from Broadstrike application did not reduce yield. These results need to be verified in other environments.

Standard farmer practice of 'pasture topping' in the previous year, followed by a knock down around the seasons break, remain the best practice before sowing saltbush or bluebush by seed.

Diuron at 1L or 2L applied post sowing pre-emergent in a wheat crop was not effective in controlling fop and dim resistant ryegrass. However, Diuron with Dual Gold or Dual Gold on its own (especially at the 0.5L rate) had better control of ryegrass. The level of control was not sufficient in a commercial sense but it may be in combination with trifluralin or with other ryegrass control strategies. Dual Gold is a Group K herbicide and will not initially add to a resistance problem.

Barley yields exceeded 5 t/ha with strong responses to lime and potassium fertiliser.

The 1.0 t/ha response to potassium (K) was not as strong as in the previous two wheat crops (1.4 t/ha in 2013 and 2.4 t/ha in 2014). This was probably partly due to better control of ryegrass in plots without K fertiliser compared to previous years.

The response to lime applied in 2011 and 2014 was also 1.0 t/ha. This followed a 0.35 t/ha response in 2014 wheat. Like 2014, lime did not affect response to K.

Compared to topdressing potash, banding K increased early crop vigour, but 140 kg/ha K-Till Extra (15K) did not supply enough K to satisfy demand of the high yield potential.

This trial has highlighted the importance of maintaining K inputs (if required) when undertaking liming programs.

Ongoing responses to lime are likely to increase future demand for K because soil reserves will be depleted at an increasing rate.
