The aim of the focus paddock was to look at growing the higher yields and understand the impact of this on residual Nitrogen left behind in the soil. Many growers use Faba Beans in their rotation to try and fix non bagged N

Different nitrogen rates and application timings will be examined to determine which management approach can maximise yield without compromising the end market.

The intention is to observe how such treatments impact yield and grain quality of irrigated barley.

To increase irrigated wheat yields with well-timed applications of foliar sprays as well as pre seeding applications of micronutrients.

To assess the strategic use of nitrogen in the form of urea totarget 10t/ha spring wheat yield under irrigation.

Maize is not commonly grown in Tasmania. This demonstration was to see what varieties would work in the local environment

Growers in this environment have been hesitant to graze canola due to the long season traditional grazing varieties and the risk of heat stress in late spring/ early summer. The hope was that a series 5 spring variety would mature earlier and require one less irrigation in spring. The growers were accepting that a yield decrease would occur however it would save them an irrigation.

To monitor for 3 key pests in maize crops - Heliothis, Fall Armyworm & Two Spotted Mites, then apply treatments that are IPM friendly if needed (Bugs for Bugs and IPM friendly insecticides).  The demonstration block will be compared to the farmers conventional treatments on the crop.

To evaluate several strategies to achieve high yielding irrigated durum wheat under overhead spray irrigation

To evaluate the performance and profitability of irrigated chickpeas and lentils under overhread spray irrigation

The majority of durum growers are trying to push yield towards 10 tonnes/ha which is resulting in some variability in quality and potential downgrading if protein requirements are not met. This trial aimed to investifgate end of season nitrogen (flag leaf) application, growth regulants and irrigation strategies and their influence that these have on final yield and quality.

The purpose of this experiment was to apply Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) to a high input durum wheat crop to
understand the impact of PGRs on standability and grain protein. The trial also included a variety split within a field
to understand the interaction between durum wheat varieties.

To investigate the impact of deep ripping and soil amelioration on sodic subsoils

To demonstrate that higher seeding rates in irrigated beans provides higher yields and compares the economics of irrigated beans to irrigated canola and wheat.

The aim of the focus paddock was to see if deep ripping could increase plant avaliable water by removing any compaction and allowing roots to access stored moisture deeper into the soil profile.

The aim of the trial was to assess the influence of PGR and nitrogen rates on the standability, head loss and yield of
an irrigated barley crop. We also wanted to observe the fit for PGR’s in a later planted crop with perceived yield
limitations due to season length.

To keep plants actively growing for as many months of the year as practicable by including Mung Beans, a 100 day summer crop.

In 2021, members of the GRDC Riverine Plains Irrigation Discussion Group tested the practical and financial implications of grazing irrigated wheat and canola. 

To supply all the maize crops nutritional needs as identified through tissue testing at three growth stages thought the season and see what the maximum yield potential is. Compare this with farmer pratice to understand the economics of pushing yield. 

Currently many growers rely upon the use of Zeal® (Etoxazole), applied to the crop via a helicopter to control mites post tasselling in the maize.  Some growers are wishing to reduce their reliance upon insecticides and enable the beneficial insects to increase on their farms. Predatory mites were released at a demonstration site in Cooma to see if insecticde use could be reduced or illiminated by importing beneficial insects
