Wheat plant density was significantly affected by the planting arrangement (P=0.012). The Ribbon seeder system had the highest wheat density (171 plants/m2) as compared to the knife-point system (156 plants/m2) and the Zero row spacing (151 plants/m2). The establishment of wheat plants in the inter-row space in the Zero row spacing treatment was strongly influenced by the pre-emergent herbicide treatment (P=0.002). Trifluralin, Avadex or Boxer Gold were higher risk pre-emergent herbicides for wheat establishment, whereas Sakura appears much safer where wheat seed is placed on the soil surface in the Zero row spacing system. Annual ryegrass (ARG) plant density was not significantly affected by the planting arrangement (P=0.513) or pre-emergent herbicide treatments (P=0.13). ARG spike density was not significantly influenced by wheat planting arrangement (P=0.185). Herbicide treatment did have a significant influence on ARG spike density (P=0.023) and ARG seed production (P=0.003). The best performing herbicide treatment of Sakura + Avadex still produced 16824 ARG seeds/m2. While this is 51% lower than the Treflan + Avadex, it will replenish the soil seedbank to a highly problematic level for the future. Wheat grain yield was significantly affected by the planting arrangement (P=0.034) and the herbicide treatments (P=0.004). Even though the differences in wheat yield were small <10% for planting arrangement and <14% for herbicide treatments, they were statistically significant.

The herbicide treatment had a significant effect on ARG density (P<0.001) in this field trial at Minnipa. Favourable rain events in June were highly suitable for the activity of both pre-emergent herbicides investigated in this trial. Averaged across the row spacing and SBU treatments, Boxer Gold and Sakura + Avadex reduced ARG plant density by 88% and 90%, respectively. The density of ARG spikes was significantly influenced by the herbicide treatment.  Boxer Gold reduced ARG spike density by 74% compared to the untreated control, whereas Sakura + Avadex caused 85% reduction in ARG spike density. The density of ARG spikes in Sakura + Avadex were significantly lower than in the Boxer Gold treatment. ARG seed production was also significantly affected by the herbicide treatment (P<0.001) but not by wheat row spacing (P=0.272) or seed boot design (P=0.994). ARG produced 5740 seeds/m2 in the untreated control, which was reduced by 74% by Boxer Gold and 86% by the mixture of Sakura + Avadex. Presence of ARG at 190 plants/m2 in the untreated control, reduced wheat grain yield by 11% compared to Boxer Gold or 8% compared to Sakura + Avadex. However, it was still profitable to control ARG with effective herbicide treatments. Based on cash grain price of Australian Premium Wheat (APW) of $400/t in 2018, Boxer Gold would be expected to increase the gross margin by $68/ha as compared $12/ha increase for Sakura + Avadex.

• Demonstrated a strong dependence of wheat seedlings linseed manganese supply.
• Real manganese uptake can only be calculated if the initial seed manganese content is known.
• Seed soaking in manganese sulphate prior to selling greatly increase the seed manganese content although less than 20% of this manganese was recovered in the seedlings after 26 days.

• Sowing wheat 75mm deep compared to 40mm deep reduced crop establishment by up to 62% and wheat yield by up to 24%.
• Within the same variety small seed was much more sensitive to deep sowing than large seed.
• Corack and Mace were the least sensitive varieties to deep sowing in terms of yield.
• Growers should endeavour to use seed larger than 35 g/thousand seeds, especially if sowing into stressful conditions.

• New pre-emergence herbicides provided effective control of annual ryegrass under both knife point and disc systems.
• Good crop safety was observed with preemergence herbicides under knife-points; however, herbicide damage was evident under discs and was due to shallow seeding depth.

• For all varieties, the middle sowing date (4 December) resulted in higher grain yields than the early (11 November) or late (23 December) sowing dates.
• Varieties, N005A-80 and BidgeeA consistently achieved the highest seed protein concentrations.
• Varieties, SnowyA and BidgeeA achieved consistent seed protein concentrations across the three sowing dates, while later sowing dates reduced the seed protein of Djakal, N005A-80 and P176-2 varieties.

A field trial was undertaken at Mallala in 2019 to investigate combinations of wheat sowing time, seed rate and herbicide treatments to control brome grass. The average seedbank of brome grass at this site was 2877 ± 406 seeds/m2. The two week delay in sowing reduced average in-crop brome density from 567 plants/m2 to 352 plants/m2 (38%). Even though the reduction in brome density at Mallala was significant, it was a much lower reduction than that observed in the trial at Riverton (82% reduction). This difference in brome grass density with delayed sowing at these two sites highlights the large differences in seed dormancy between the populations of this weed species. Brome grass panicle density was significantly affected by wheat seed rate (P=0.039), and herbicide treatment (P<0.001) but not by the time of sowing (P=0.152). Increasing seed rate of wheat suppressed brome grass growth and reduced its panicle density. As wheat density increased from 100 seeds/m2 (low) to the highest seed rate (200 seeds/m2 – high) brome panicle density was reduced by 39%. These results support previous findings that higher crop density can be an important part of an integrated weed management program. Wheat grain yield increased consistently with the increase in seed rate or crop density. This trend correlates well with the improved suppression of brome grass panicle density observed in the trial. Not only did higher wheat density achieve superior weed suppression, it also provided a significant increase in grain yield. Herbicide treatments also had a highly significant effect on brome grass panicle density. However, there was no interaction herbicides and TOS or seed rate. This indicates that herbicides performed similarly in both times of sowing and the three seed rates. Sakura + Avadex significantly reduced panicle density as compared to Treflan + Avadex and Intercept (Clearfield technology) was used after pre-emergent Treflan + Avadex, it prevented brome plants from producing panicles (3 panicles/m2). Herbicide treatments had a large and significant effect on grain yield of wheat at Mallala (Figure 5). This is not surprising considering the high weed density present at the site and high competitive ability of brome grass. The treatment of Treflan + Avadex produced only 1.11 t/ha, which was significantly lower than the more expensive pre-emergent herbicide mixture of Sakura + Avadex (1.81 t/ha). However, when Intercept post-emergence herbicide was used, wheat yield increased further to 2.63 t/ha. In this trial, integration of Clearfield technology with pre-emergent herbicides not only prevented brome grass seed set as shown but the panicle density, it also delivered the highest grain yields.

A field trial was undertaken at Riverton in 2019 to investigate combinations of wheat sowing time, seed rate and herbicide treatments to control brome grass. The average seedbank of brome grass at the site was 1863 ± 303 seeds/m2. Brome grass at this site was effectively controlled (>80%) by delaying sowing by 2 weeks, with treatment effects from herbicide and wheat seed rate treatment only being significant in the early sown plots, where brome grass density was high. These results clearly indicate that brome grass population present at this site has very low seed dormancy and germinates readily after the season opening rains and can be effectively controlled with a knockdown herbicide. Wheat grain yield results reflected the level of brome grass control with herbicide and wheat seed rate treatments improving yields significantly as brome suppression improved. These treatments did not have a significant effect on yield when sowing was delayed because brome was effectively controlled by the knockdown herbicides. In the early sown crop when brome grass was controlled effectively with Intercept®, the 2 week delay in sowing caused a 9% reduction in wheat yield.

• There were large weed control benefits of delayed sowing of barley at Minnipa. However, when a highly effective pre-emergent herbicide was applied the benefit of delayed sowing was negligible.
• In barley a three week delay in sowing time did not significantly reduce grain yield as it did in the previous year in wheat. Lower yield penalty in barley from delayed sowing may be related to its earlier maturity and more competitive nature compared to wheat.

 

A field trial was undertaken at Minnipa in 2019 to investigate combinations of barley sowing time, seed rate and herbicide treatments to control annual ryegrass. The average seedbank of annual ryegrass (ARG) at the site was 4168 ± 411 seeds/m2. ARG plant density was significantly influenced by the time of sowing (P<0.001), herbicide treatment (P<0.001) and the interaction between the time of sowing and herbicide (P<0.001). There was a large impact of the 3 week delay in seeding barley on ARG plant density. This was particularly evident in the untreated control in which ARG density decreased from 676 plants/m2 in TOS 1 to 379 plants/m2 in TOS 2. This large reduction in ARG density due to delayed sowing is most likely related to rainfall events in early May, which would have caused weed emergence. Pre-emergence herbicides had higher efficacy in TOS 2 where the density of ARG plants had been reduced by the delay in seeding. This trend held through the season in the untreated control in which ARG spike density decreased from 306 spikes/m2 in TOS 1 to 199 spikes/m2 in TOS 2. In the trifluralin treatment, ARG produced 5078 seeds/m2 in TOS 2 as compared to 9192 seeds/m2 in TOS 1, a 45% reduction in ARG seed production. Unlike wheat in 2018, barley grain yield at Minnipa was not significantly influenced by the time of sowing (P=0.644). However, seed rate (P<0.001), herbicide treatment (P<0.001) and had a significant effect on barley grain yield. As stated earlier, there were large benefits of delayed sowing on weed control. In barley a three week delay did not significantly reduce grain yield as it had in the previous year in wheat. Lower yield penalty in barley from delayed sowing may be related to its earlier maturity than wheat.

Barley grain yield as significantly influenced by the time of sowing (P=0.025), seed rate (P<0.001) and the herbicide treatment (P<0.001). The delay of 4 weeks between the two sowing dates caused 22% (0.69 t/ha) reduction in grain yield or 25 kg/ha/day. Averaged over the two sowing dates and three seed rates, Boxer Gold treatment (2.996 t/ha) produced significantly greater barley grain yield than Treflan (2.634 t/ha) and the control (2.648 t/ha). Barley sown early (TOS 1) at high seed rate and sprayed with Boxer Gold produced 3.6 t/ha grain yield as compared to later sown crop (TOS 2) at low seed rate but treated with the same herbicide which produced 2.4 t/ha.

General application of Sakura + Avadex over the whole trial site provided good control of ARG. As a result, follow-up application of Boxer Gold @ 1.5 L/ha or 2 L/ha at GS 11 (1-leaf stage) did not significantly reduce ARG plant density.  Post-emergence application of Boxer Gold at 1.5 or 2 L/ha after pre-emergence Sakura + Avadex extended the period of weed control, which reduced spike density of ARG (P=0.02). At both sowing times, increase in wheat plant density from 100 to 200 plants/m2 reduced ARG spike density by 44%. Delayed sowing at this site reduced the competitive ability of wheat against ARG. Averaged across the seed rates and herbicide treatments, ARG produced 234 spikes/m2 in TOS 2 as compared to 75 spikes/m2 in TOS 1 (68% reduction in TOS 1). Additional post-emergence application of Boxer Gold significantly increased wheat grain yield (P=0.008) compared to the baseline treatment of Sakura + Avadex. Wheat yield increased by 9% or 0.4 t/ha with the additional post-emergence treatment of Boxer Gold as compared to Sakura + Avadex treatment alone. Wheat grain yield was also significantly affected by wheat seed rate (P<0.001). Wheat grain yield increased from 4.6 t/ha at the density of 100 plants/m2 to the maximum of 5.48 t/ha at the seed rate of 200 plants/m2. This yield gain of 0.9 t/ha clearly indicates that early sowing, wheat density of 200 plants/m2 and effective use of herbicides can have a large influence on the profitability of wheat in the HRZ.

Wheat grain yield at Minnipa was significantly influenced by the time of sowing (P=0.002), seed rate (P<0.001), herbicide treatment (P<0.001) and the interaction between the time of sowing and herbicide treatments (P<0.001). Averaged across the seed rates and herbicide treatments, wheat produced grain yield of 1.67 t/ha in TOS 1 as compared to 1.06 t/ha in TOS 2. There were large benefits of delayed sowing on weed control. However, these benefits came at a significant cost in wheat grain yield.

The trial site at Mallala was infested with a large seedbank of group A resistant brome grass, which made weed control in canola very difficult. Furthermore, the trial site experienced drought like conditions for most of the growing season which reduced the efficacy of atrazine. Even though the two-week delay in sowing reduced brome grass density from 927 plants/m2 in TOS 1 to 704 plants/m2 in TOS 2 (25%), this difference was not statistically significant.  However, the herbicide treatments (P=0.005) and the interaction between sowing date and herbicides (P=0.006) had a significant effect on brome grass plant density. Herbicide performance at the site was negatively affected by dry conditions and group A resistance in brome grass. As a result, even the best treatment combinations had more than 300 panicles/m2, which could lead to a large seed set in brome grass. When averaged across the sowing time, seed rate and herbicides, HyTTec Trophy produced 38% higher grain yield than Bonito. This difference in variety performance is consistent with superior crop establishment in HyTTec Trophy than Bonito. As a result of herbicide resistance in brome grass, yield increase in the Verdict treatment compared to the control (atrazine POST) was non-significant. However, use of clethodim increased yield by 61% compared to the control, which was statistically significant.

Barley plant density was significantly influenced by the time of sowing (P=0.025) and crop seed rate (P=0.002).  Averaged across the seed rates and herbicide treatments, the first time of sowing (TOS 1) had barley density of 125 plants/m2 compared to 82 plants/m2 in TOS 2, which was related to dry soil conditions after sowing in TOS 2. Brome grass plant density was significantly affected by the time of sowing (P=0.018) and the herbicide treatments (P<0.001).  The 4-week delay in sowing between TOS 1 and TOS 2, allowed greater emergence of brome grass seedlings before the sowing of the TOS 2.  Consequently, barley sown at TOS 2 had 48% lower brome grass infestation (107.9 plants/m2) than in TOS 1 (207 plants/m2). As expected, herbicide treatments had a significant (P<0.001) effect on brome grass density. When averaged across the sowing time and seed rates, the treatment of Treflan + Avadex was only moderately effective and reduced brome grass density by 36% (173 plants/m2) relative to the untreated control (271 plants/m2). In contrast, the same pre-emergent treatment (Treflan + Avadex) followed by Intervix reduced brome grass density by 90% (28 plants/m2). When averaged across seed rates and herbicide treatments, the time of sowing barley had a significant effect on its grain yield (P=0.011). TOS 1 produced 940 kg/ha greater barley grain yield than TOS 2. The post-emergence application of Intervix to the crop treated with Treflan + Avadex further increased barley grain yield by 872 kg/ha. These results are consistent with the trends in brome grass density and panicle production. The untreated control plots produced 40% lower grain yield than the Intervix treatment, which completely controlled brome grass. These results highlight the strong competitive ability of brome grass in cereals.

The average seedbank of ARG at the site was 3932 ± 270 seeds/m2. ARG plant density was significantly influenced by the time of sowing (P<0.001), herbicide treatment (P<0.001) and the interaction between the time of sowing and herbicide (P<0.001). The delay in seeding from TOS 1 to TOS 2 (16 weeks) caused a large reduction in ARG plant density. This was particularly evident in the untreated control in which ARG density decreased from 825 plants/m2 in TOS 1 to 31 plants/m2 in TOS 2 (96% reduction). This large reduction in ARG density due to delayed sowing is most likely related to an effective knockdown herbicide treatment after most ARG had emerged before TOS 2. Herbicide treatments reduced ARG plant density significantly in TOS 1, however herbicide effect on ARG plant density in TOS 2 was non-significant, possibly due to a much lower ARG density. While the delay in sowing significantly reduced ARG plant density (P<0.001), it did not significantly reduce ARG seed spikes (P=0.495). This result indicates that despite low ARG plant numbers in TOS 2, faba beans failed to compete effectively with ARG and suppress its growth. As a result, even at a relatively low density ARG was able to produce a large amount of seed for future infestations. Faba bean grain yield at Frances was significantly influenced by the time of sowing (P=0.033), seed rate (P<0.003), and herbicide treatment (P<0.001). Averaged across the seed rates and herbicide treatments, faba beans produced grain yield of 1.34 t/ha in TOS 1 as compared to 1.81 t/ha in TOS 2. Superior faba bean grain yield in TOS 2 In 2018 at Frances is most likely due to the reduction in ARG plant density.

A field trial was undertaken at Frances in 2019 to investigate combinations of barley sowing time, seed rate and herbicide treatments to control annual ryegrass. The average seedbank of annual ryegrass (ARG) at the site was quite low (472 ± 143 seeds/m2), which was reflected in low plant density at the site. ARG plant density was significantly influenced by the time of sowing (P=0.037), and herbicide treatment (P=0.009). There was a 37% reduction in ARG plant density between TOS 1 (20 plants/m2) and TOS 2 (13 plants/m2). Herbicide treatment had a significant effect on ARG plant density, with Boxer Gold showing lower efficacy on ARG than Treflan and Boxer Gold + Treflan. Unlike ARG plant density, ARG spike density was not influenced by time of sowing (P=0.171). ARG spike density was significantly influenced by barley seed rate (P=0.016), herbicide treatment (P=0.01) and the interaction between TOS and herbicide treatment (P=0.019). ARG spike density was 34% and 40% lower in medium and high seed rates respectively when compared to the low seed rate. These results suggest an improvement in ARG suppression from increasing barley competiveness with increased seed rate. Barley grain yield at the site averaged 6.6 t/ha. Herbicide treatment had a small (4-6%), but significant effect (P=0.009) on grain yield with Boxer Gold < Treflan ≤ Boxer Gold + Treflan for barley yield.

• Small pointed snails are an increasing problem in the Albany and Esperance port zones.
• A grower survey shows that while many farmers engage in a snail baiting program, 60% of these are unsure as to the efficacy of baiting on small pointed conical snail control.
• Caged trials show that all active ingredients in snail baits cause mortality to snails, however the amount of active ingredient has no effect on the rate of mortality, it is the number of bait points that has the most impact on numbers of snails killed.
• There is no difference in the efficacy of a rainfast versus a non-rainfast bait. However, caged trials suggest that non-rainfast baits lose their integrity after 14 days.

• The soil treatments investigated at these sites are considered to be ineffective for broad acre farming.
• Changes to nematode composition and microbial biomass were small and did not result in plant biomass production.
• Inprovements in the effectiveness of the soil treatments may occur when applied as seed dressings.

• Plant densities varied with seed rate, time of planting and variety.
• Quinilock showed the greatest response in protein level to delayed planting time.

• Zinc oxide fertilisers had lower solubility and dissolution than zinc sulphates.
• Zinc oxide was as effective as zinc sulphate if it was mixed with the soil but not when banded near the seed.
• Zinc sulphate would be preferable to zinc oxide in no-till systems where fertiliser is banded.

• In 2013, newer varieties of medic (Sultan-SU), vetch (RM1 an Timok) and forage pea (PBA Hayman) when cut at the same time (different stages between maturities) performed better or equally as well in forage values as previously used varieties.
• Choose forage legume varieties to suit your paddock system needs.
• Consider group B herbicide tolerance, disease and aphid resistance, the type of seed (hard or soft) and growing season length of newer varieties to suit grazing, hay and/or seed production.

• High operational speed reduced sowing depth of both disc and tyne openers.
• Counts of unsprayed (nil) annual ryegrass were greater for the tyne machine than the disc seeder at 8km/h and 14km/h.
• Within the applied herbicide treatments herbicide efficacy was fairly high. 
• all standing stubble and poor seed placement at 8km/h and 10km/h by the tyne machine severely affected crop establishment.
• At 14km/h the discs ability to penetrate the soil was greatly reduced, impacting sowing depth.
• Barley yields were higher for the disc sown treatments than the tyne sown treatments.

• Phosphorus rates of 10 and 20 kg/ha applied in various straight, compound, coated and liquid fertiliser forms were not found to result in any significant responses in grain yield or quality.
• Results were impacted by the failure to control a population of herbicide-resistant annual ryegrass at this trial site using both pre- and post-em herbicide options, resulting in a high variability between plot measurement.

• In 2017 the removal of a high barley stubble load resulted in better medic plant numbers late in the season (September), and increased (but still very low) dry matter production.
• Heavy barley stubbles from harvesting either high or low resulted in similar medic regeneration.
• Treating heavy barley stubbles with either rolling, a light tickle or left standing did not change medic establishment or dry matter production in 2017.

There were no differences in medic regeneration in wheat stubbles either harvested at two heights, left standing or rolled.

• What are host farmers thoughts?

- The trial gave the Sparkman’s the knowledge that this method of regenerating salt land pastures was not effective and that clay seed ball dispersal by air would not be feasibly.
- How are farmers going to plant in these areas in the future?
- With less salt affected sites the clay seed ball method could work. The clay seed ball seeds germinated under Greenhouse conditions so that there is a possibility of germination in more favourable conditions.

• What is the prospect of clay ball seeding in the future?

- Clay ball seeding has been effectively used in the MurrayDarling river system pre the 2000 drought (ABC Landline story) and near Geraldton to grow Tagasaste on non wetting soils (personal communication - RH Logue).
- However the clay seed ball method may work with less salt affected sites.
This trial showed that regenerating salt land pastures by this method was not effective on the harsh sites at the Sparkman property.

• Bambatsi Panic and Rhodes grass have good drought tolerance but maintaining a high plant density has proved difficult.
• Due to low rainfall seasons, more drought tolerant species are required on the site hence planting the saltbush alleys.
• Salinity varies over the site and therefore so does the ground cover, species composition and FOO.
• Roly-poly control can be achieved by spraying with 2,4-D Ester ad Garlon and rolling.

The following report provides a handy technique for estimating pasture legume seed reserves in paddocks. The method involves simulating the season's break by watering an area of ground and counting the subsequent germinating of medic or sub clover plants.

• The highest yielding pulse in 2003 at Euabalong was field peas, followed by lupins and then vetch.
• All pulse crop gross margins were negative, reflecting the cost of seed, the cost of herbicides and the effect of drought on grain production.

• Loose smut in barley is internally seed borne so if you are seeing infected heads then it means your grain souce was contaminated. It is the hardest of the smut diseases to control because it is an internally seed borne infection and most current seed treatments are not as effective on internally seed borne diseases.
• EverGol Prime has excellent local systemicity, being able to move across the seed wall and into the seed. It is an excellent option for control of loose smut.
• The applicaiton of Sakura into barley was not successful with the APVMA. Therefore we will not review the results as this component of the trial in regard to the interactions with pre-emergent herbicides.

• All treatments met Hindmarsh food grade parameters although loose smut was not tested for, which may have excluded the untreated from delivery due to its levels of infection.
• There was no significant difference in yield between treatments.

• Production of alternative pulse options to field pea in low rainfall regions has potential to be successful under favourable seasonal conditions providing essential production criteria are met.
• Some new varietal options offer earlier maturity as well as improvements in harvestability, disease resistance and herbicide tolerance over older commercial standards, aiding production and profitability.
• Field peas have proven to be a reliable option on the upper Eyre Peninsula and are likely to be a lower risk and more profitable option in seasonal conditions that are less favourable for alternative pulse options.
• Chickpeas are generally less suited to many cropping regions of South Australia, and with a change in the ascochyta blight pathogen growers need to carefully consider their risk to AB infection and ability to effectively control the disease, including in low rainfall regions.

• This and other research demonstrates that it is possible to improve crop establishment and productivity on water repellent soils using modified furrow sowing techniques.
• Banded wetting agents are helpful with early dry or partially dry sowing before opening rains but show less benefit later in the sowing program when there has already been rain and the soil has started to wet up more (see Banded wetting agent paper WMG 2012 research annual). In very erodible conditions with high wind erosion risk the use of this strategy may be safer than the options with winged points or boots due to less soil disturbance and release of root anchorage for existing plant cover. Optimal wetting agents for WMG areas still need identification.
• Winged points and winged-paired row systems perform better than knife points under certain soil conditions but the benefits are variable and in some sowing conditions may provide little benefit. Further research is required. Winged points look most attractive when shallow moist soil can be ‘delved’ to the seed zone to provide early establishment (as in the winged knife point on the gravelly sand with shallow moisture).
• Simple approaches like sowing next to or at a shallow angle across the previous year’s crop row and broadcast spreading a portion of the seed in front of the seeding tynes are relatively simple approaches that can provide establishment benefits.
•  

Leaf rust assessments on this trial have shown that Epoxiconazole at 375 ml/ha had the best response in this trial. The Powdery Mildew infection level were very low but there still was some response. A late application of Propiconazole at Z45 was the best performer with 0.47% infection of Powdery Mildew. Tilt Xtra (Propiconazole + Cyproconazole) was the second best result with 0.73% infection.

Good establishment and weed control is more important than varietal selection for productivity and persistence of lucerne • There was no significant difference in establishment or biomass production between lucerne varieties in 2007 and 2008 • This trial will continue in 2009 to further evaluate persistence and productivity

• Selecting wheat varieties with stripe rust resistance (rating 7-8) is the most effective form of managing the disease, however the limited number of varieties with the combination of desirable agronomic traits and sufficient resistance will see the continued need for fungicide control strategies
• Yields of H45 (very susceptible to stripe rust) were maximised by keeping the crop free from disease until flag emergence and, most critically in high yielding situations, following up with a foliar fungicide.

• A single slug baiting was ineffective at controlling slug populations.
• Direct drilling into a heavy cereal stubble from a previous crop can result in significant slug damage to canola, even with a single baiting.
• Cereal stubble removal by burning, will significantly reduce the amount of slug damage.
• Cultivation prior to sowing will have a positive effect on reducing slug numbers and damage to canola.
• An integrated pest management approach is required to control slugs effectively. Each treatment alone does not adequately control slug populations.

• The presence of oats reduced barley yields from no significant reduction up to 31.27%.
• Varieties FathomA and CommanderA were the most effective varieties at suppressing oat development.
• BassA and BulokeA demonstrated no significant yield reduction in the presence of oats.

• Two trials were conducted to compare dry matter production and subsequent grain yield from cereal crops. In one trial four cereal crop species wheat (Mackellar), barley (Urambie), triticale (Breakwell), and oats (Bass) were compared. With a longer vegetative period, a second DM cut was able to be taken from Bass oats and consequently total DM production was significantly higher than from Mackellar which in turn produced significantly more DM than Breakwell and Urambie. Grain yield was significantly higher from Breakwell (9.4 t/ha).
• In a second trial, 7 wheat varieties and breeding lines were compared. There were statistically no differences in DM production between the wheats. The CSIRO line 95102.1 and Alberic were the highest grain producers.

Mackellar wheat showed the most potential as a dual purpose crop with the highest grain yield and DM production comparable to all other varieties except Bass. The latter produced the most fodder but the lowest grain yield. There was no significant difference in DM
production between Mackellar, Breakwell, Urambie and Franklin however there was a large difference in when this was produced. Franklin barley (and a Chinese line) were far more vigorous early whereas the later developing varieties, in particular Bass, tended to produce less DM but extra cuts ensured a higher total DM.

Due to unforseen circumstances, results for 2011 aren’t available for the Seedmark pasture evaluation sites. Seedmark do however look forward to continuing their work with MFMG in 2012 to explore the most appropriate Forage/Pasture rotation options.

The Field Days did however see the release of the new pasture variety “Monti” bred and developed by SARDI’s pastures group and released by the Australian Pasture Alliance (APA), an alliance between SARDI and Seedmark. Struan based SARDI researchers Andy
Craig and Freya Hawker lead the development of Monti with an extensive evaluation program run across a number of research site for the last 4 years. Below are some photos from the event.

• Pie-sowing treatments of trifluralin herbicide are effective in increasing yields in a barley crop infested with Vulpia. Application rates of 3.0 1/ha produced a significant result, while application rate of 1.5 1/ha produced a strong trend.
• No significant differences could be demonstrated between Post-sowing treatments employed in this trial due to large variations between plots. However averaged results indicate trends that can be further explored with more trial work. 
• For further conclusions please see the attached trial report.
   

• Mungbean yield potential ranged from a low of 0.81 t/ha up to a high of 2.70 t/ha in three years of irrigated variety evaluation experiments at Trangie in the Macquarie Valley.
• Jade_AUA (released 2013) is the recommended variety for Macquarie Valley mungbean growers with the highest yield potential, largest seed size (an important quality attribute for marketing) and best disease tolerance package. CrystalA would be an adequate second-best option based on yield and potential seed size.
• Niche mungbean varieties such as Regur (black gram type), and the two small-seeded lines Celera IIA and Green DiamondA, would have to command a substantial premium for their respective seed quality attributes to compensate for the poorer yield potential demonstrated in these experiments.

• Brome grass is increasing in prevalence across southern Australia and control in cereals is heavily reliant on Group B herbicides (sulfonylurea and imidazolinones).
• Experimental herbicides evaluated in this study were effective on brome (>90% control), but were also unsuitable for barley causing severe crop damage; trials undertaken this season (2017) will focus on wheat.
• Identifying effective but safe herbicide options for brome in cereals remains a high priority.

There was no take-all evident in the second cereal (wheat on wheat) trial and as a consequence no seed treatment differences in yield, however there was evidence of late season leaf rust control in the second wheat trial.

Removal of subsoil compaction by deep ripping resulted in a 370 kg/ha (45%) yield benefit with spading giving an additional benefit of 12% (100 kg/ha) and mouldboard ploughing 39% (320 kg/ha) compared with the deep ripping treatment. Higher biomass and increased head density in the cultivation treatments are indicative of improved nutrient access and effcient use of available water through the season. Water use efficiency was 4.9 kg/ha/mm of growing season rainfall for the control treatment compared with 7.1 kg/ha/mm for ripped, 7.6 kg/ha/mm for spaded and 8.9 kg/ha/mm for mouldboard ploughing. Recent research is showing that nutrient availability is improved when top soil is buried by spading or mouldboard 
ploughing because nutrients become concentrated in the rootzone and less suscpetible to soil drying from evaporation, which can be the case when majority of the nutrients are on the soil surface, (Davies et al, 2012).

Key messages:

• Treating EGA GregoryA seed with Rancona Dimension reduced establishment losses associated with the addition of crown rot inoculum to 7% compared with 26% when no seed treatment was used.
• In this instance, Rancona Dimension did not provide a significant or consistent yield benefit in the presence of high levels of crown rot infection across the 12 trial sites in 2015.
• Growers should not expect Rancona Dimension to provide a significant and consistent reduction in yield loss from crown rot infection when used as a standalone management strategy.
• Growers considering the use of Rancona Dimension should follow the manufacturer’s advice and only consider it as part of an integrated management strategy against crown rot.

Conclusions

Rancona® Dimension is registered in Australia for the suppression of crown rot infection. Rancona® Dimension reduced establishment losses associated with severe early infection, created by the addition of crown rot inoculum to the seed furrow at sowing, to 7% compared to 26% in the absence of a seed treatment. Further research is required to determine if this improvement in establishment is associated with reduced Fusarium seedling blight. It should also be established whether such severe establishment losses are an artefact of the inoculation process used in the trials or occurs naturally in paddocks with high stubble-borne inoculum loads. In a separate larger trial conducted at Tamworth in 2015 in which infected stubble at the surface was the inoculum source Rancona® Dimension did not have a significant impact on the establishment of EGA Gregory compared to the Nil seed treatment (data not presented). Establishment benefits apparent in the 12 trials unfortunately did not translate into any improvement in grain yield. Rancona® Dimension did not provide a significant yield benefit over the use of no seed treatment or the two other commonly used seed treatments examined in this study under high crown rot pressure across 12 sites in 2015.

Although Rancona® Dimension is registered for the suppression of crown rot, with activity against early infection and potential establishment losses evident in this study, growers should not expect this to translate into a significant and consistent reduction in yield loss from crown rot infection when the product is used as a standalone management strategy. Integrated management remains the best strategy to reduce losses to crown rot. Growers may like to consider including Rancona® Dimension (320 mL/100 kg seed) as one additional component in their integrated management of crown rot.

There were significant increases in tissue tests levels where boron and moly had been applied. Plant tissue levels were also significantly lower in phosphorus where 18 kg/ha had been applied versus 25 kg P.

• Both Aramo and Bounty performed as expected in the field in accordance with the label recommendations.
• Conditions at time of spraying and for the rest of the season were not favourable, however, both products stood up and performed quite well when compared to the unsprayed areas.

• Seasonal conditions can affect the disease complexes that exist for sub-clovers in any season (eg. the drier summers in 2014 & 2015 would be expected to cause a higher incidence of Rhizoctonia, whereas the wetter season in 2016 saw Pythium sp., Aphanomyces sp. and Phytophthora sp. more likely to be the dominant diseases).
• Current sub-clover establishment management practices (knockdown herbicide, cultivation, use of Apron seed dressing and sowing newer varieties or those that are widely adapted to the region) appear to be reducing the risk posed by root disease across the region.

• Sowing late into a high disease burden may offset any benefits of varietal disease resistance or the benefits of chemical control methods (i.e. seed treatments).
• Seasonal conditions can affect the disease complexes that exist in any season (eg. the drier summers in 2014 & 2015 would be expected to cause a higher incidence of Rhizoctonia, whereas Pythium sp., Aphanomyces sp. and Phytophthora sp. are likely to be more dominant in wetter seasons).
• Varietal differences were observed in establishment and persistence, however it is yet to be determined if this was due to root disease tolerance.

• The timing of brownout had no significant effect on the germination rate. This may have been due to a simulated “cultivation” immediately prior to sowing.
• Significant differences were found in the germination levels between varieties; Woogenellup is an older variety that is thought to be more susceptible to root diseases. The varietal difference suggests that root disease may be an issue across the region.
• Demonstration site responses to metalaxyl seed treatments in sub-clover germination suggests that root disease may be present and affecting establishment and persistence.

• Commercial viability has been difficult to demonstrate.
• Field trials demonstrated that the H Senor was able to accurately classify annual ryegrass in several broadleaf crops, including canola, faba bean, lentil and field pea.
• Other grass weeds such as brome grass and wild oats were also correctly identified as grasses in these crops.
• Broad leaf weeds were accurately classified in cereal crops, however this was more difficult due to the overlapping nature of the cereal crops at the time when the broadleaf weeds had emerged.
• Classification accuracy was lower for detection of grass weeds in cereal crops and broadleaf weeds in broadleaf crops, and these scenarios were not pursued for that reason.  

• Commercial viability has been difficult to demonstrate.
• Field trials demonstrated that the H Senor was able to accurately classify annual ryegrass in several broadleaf crops, including canola, faba bean, lentil and field pea.

• Early sowing, concurrent with previous research, was highest yielding in 2012
• There appear to be several promising new varieties available for southern Victoria, offering a range of grain types and forage options, associated with excellent yield potential.
• Crop topping results highlight the importance for growers and advisors to be aware of both weed and crop growth stages, otherwise significant grain yield loss could occur.

• Commercial viability has been difficult to demonstrate.
• Field trials demonstrated that the H Senor was able to accurately classify annual ryegrass in several broadleaf crops, including canola, faba bean, lentil and field pea.
• Other grass weeds such as brome grass and wild oats were also correctly identified as grasses in these crops.

• An advanced breeding line (AF07125) has been developed with improved resistance to CLS.
• There was no CLS in the trial, and the fungicide amended fertiliser (Impact-in-furrow) provided no additional benefits in terms of grain yield.
• Disease levels were low, and grain yield was high, averaging 4.3t/ha across the trial.
• The potential release AF07125 was the highest yielding variety, outyielding Farah and Nura by 5%

• The late break (12 June) and prevailing seasonal conditions were unfavourable for the spread of disease, although chocolate spot and rust did infect the trial plots early in the season. Disease was not a yield limiting factor in this trial this year.
• No significant difference was recorded between any of the different fungicide spray programs within varieties or between varieties.
• Fiesta VF plots had a reduced plant population compared to the other varieties due to poor seed quality of the commercial seed sourced.y treatment.

• A low level of rust infection occurred during October and was the only foliar disease affecting bean performance.
• 7% higher grain yields occurred in the fortnightly sprayed (improved rust control) and single
  cercospora treatment (reasons unclear) compared with the nil treatment.
• Grain yields decreased by 14% when sowing date was delayed from May 1 to May 18. No
  further yield loss occurred when sowing date was delayed to June 6.
• Nura was higher yielding than Farah at the mid sowing time and equal at the others, unlike
  in previous trials where Nura has been lower yielding at later sowing dates. Late rainfall events in 2007 were of more benefit to Nura than Farah.
• Necking (collapsing of top part of bean plant) was greater at the early sowing time. Nura
  had a higher level of necking than Farah sown early, but yields were the same. Similar
  necking and yield occurred between the two varieties when sown late.

• There was low disease pressure in 2018 and there was no difference in grain yield between the nil control and various fungicide programs. 

• There was low disease pressure in 2018 and there was no difference in grain yield between the nil control and the fungicide programs.  
   

• In a year with high rust pressure, fungicide application provided beneficial to all genotypes, even those with a good level of rust resistance.
• Several advanced breeding lines from the northern breeding program show promise, with high yield and large seed size combined with rust and chocolate spot resistance equal to or better than the current northern varieties.

Conclusion:

The high rust pressure and frequent rainfall towards the end of the season was likely responsible for the poor fungicide response in the LF experiment in terms of reducing symptoms and improving yield and seed size. In the HF experiment, mancozeb and
tebuconozole were most effective overall in reducing symptoms and improving yield and seed size. Four of the five fungicides were effective in increasing yield in the HF experiment compared with only one in the LF experiment, indicating the need for repeated sprays when disease pressure is high.

Note that the permit for tebuconazole allows for only three applications of 145 mL/ha in commercial crops.

 

• Adding phosphorus (P) did not significantly increase yield or seed weight in the varieties PBA WardaA and PBA NasmaA.
• PBA NasmaA produced greater yield and seed size than PBA WardaA.

Conclusions:

In this experiment, additional P did not increase yield, however, on a lower P site, a positive response to P might occur. The reduction in yield caused by adding N might be due to reduced nodulation in N-treated plots, although nodulation was not measured in this trial. The greater yield and seed size of PBA NasmaA compared with PBA WardaA supports other experimental data.

• In a year of high disease pressure, most fungicides did not provide a yield and seed size benefit when used at low frequency.
• A high frequency fungicide strategy provided yield benefit using a number of products.
   

Either moly treatments had any increase in yield or nodulation. Tisue tests aso showed increase moly levels but the control was above deficiency threshhold.

• The optimum time to sow faba beans in southern NSW was late April–mid May.
• Even in a favourable season such as 2016 there was a 10% yield penalty when sowing was delayed from 7 May to 2 June.
• Average seed size reduced by 8% when sown outside the recommended window.
• PBA Nasma, Fiesta VF, and PBA Zahra were the highest yielding commercial varieties.
• Advanced breeding lines AF10089 and AF09169 had significantly higher grain yields, particularly at the 28 April sowing date when compared to other sowing dates.
• Flowering duration for PBA Samira and PBA Zahra was stable across sowing dates, but reduced for PBA Nasma as sowing was delayed.

• PBA Samira and PBA Zahra have consistently been among the highest yielding commercial entries at teh Westmere site in 2015-17, out-yielding older faba bean varieties.
• There is a continued improvement in yield of faba bean linies with teh top breeding lines out-yielding current varieties at the Westmere site in 2015-17
• Seed wt was lower in 2017 than 2016 and this is most likely due to lower rainfall during the seed development phase in 2017.

These results are only preliminary and should not be used on their own. The effects of the different fungicides will require greater investigation before significant interpretation can be made.

• In a season with very little disease pressure, small varietal differences in chocolate spot did occur throughout the season, but these differences did not manifest into yield differences. Seed rate was critical to maximise yield in 2020, where lower seeds rates produced significantly lower yields when compared to higher seed rates. Seed rates also had a major effect on crop architecture, with lower seed rate treatments podding over a longer portion of the stem and having a higher pod number but lower overall dry matter harvest than that of higher seed rates.

 

• In 2020 grin yields were high (3.36 and 2.96 t/ha) considering the dry finish to the season. As with the sowing rate trial, varieties that were slower to mature and held a green canopy for longer and could not convert the green leaf area into yield due to the very dry spring conditions Variety selection is the key to minimise diseases. However, in low disease pressure situations, less disease doesn’t mean higher yields.

PBA Samira, PBA Zahra, and PBA Amberley, varieties with improved resistance to chocolate spot had less symptoms and better grain yields than PBA Marne and PBA Bendoc. At Tarrington, where there was very high disease pressure, the new chemistry fungicide strategy increased grain yield by 33% (to 4 t/ha) compared to the control where fungicides were not applied (3 t/ha).

Despite some early infection, disease was not a significant issue in 2019 due to dry spring conditions. There was no difference in the grain yield response of varieties to disease management strategy. At the higher rainfall zone site, Gymbowen, a complete fungicide spray treatment (7 applications) increased grain yield by 5-8% compared with other strategies, which was not profitable. An early flowering line, AF12025, was the highest yielding line, similar to Curyo and consistent with previous observations.

Although disease pressure was low, the resistant variety, PBA Amberley had significantly lower occurrence of chocolate spot disease than the other two varieties confirming improved resistance in this variety. The lower rainfall in spring was not conducive to chocolate spot and no infections were seen until late November when plants were near maturity. Further research is required to clarify the fungicide treatments required to control chocolate spot in PBA Amberley, especially in seasons more conducive to the disease.

Tebuconazole foliar fungicide is the superior treatment for controlling this disease, showing that Systiva® seed treatment or Uniform® in furrow were not effective fungicide treatments for control of cercospora leaf spot. 182 Infection from cercospora leaf spot was high early in the season at eight node stage where Uniform mildly suppressed severity compared to the nil treatment. However, by spring the standard tebuconazole treatment at six node growth stage prevented further spread of the disease.

The grain yield of faba beans significantly increased at higher plant densities especially when the when the diseases were controlled. Despite a late autumn break, with adequate chemical disease control, PBA Samira grain yields more than tripled (from 1.5 t/ha to 5.4 t/ha) when plant densities increased from 5 plants/m2 to 45 plants/m2 at Tarrington in 2019.

In 2019 at Lake Bolac, faba bean grain yield was reduced by 15% when the crop emerged on June 12 compared to May 23. PBA Zahra and PBA Nasma had larger seed sizes than PBA Samira and PBA Marne.

Cu greatly increased yield fro 560 kg/ha to 1570 kg/ha.  Copper was applied as copper sulfate at 6.6 kg/ha.

Highlights of the results are:

(a) preseeding cultivations after drilling the Cu in 1979 markedly increased Cu uptake;

(b) medium sized Cu-OSP was inferior ti fine granule size

(c) the effects of granule size & 1979 pre-seeding cultivations were not reflected in 1980 Cu uptakes.  The effectiveness of the treatments which were relatively ineffective in 1980 as those treatments which were most effective in 1979

(d) Cu drilled with the seed in 1980 was much less effective than all Cu treatments applied the previous year

(e) although all grades of Cu-OSP drilled with the seed in 1980 were relatively ineffective compared with that applied the previous year, the inclusion of 15% fine material with 85% medium material increased Cu uptake from the fertiliser by 40%, 50% fine material increased Cu uptake from fertiliser by 80%.

GRanules > 3 mm are much less effective than medium sized granules.

REsearch suggests that 1 kg/ha copper sulfate at early boot is required for the first crop where Cu fertiliser is applied at recommended rates.

 

This demonstration showed that there was little difference in yield between Premium seed and farm-retained seed.

The farming systems trial is in its first yera of operation and has collected base line information so that the effects of each farming system on soil characteristics, weed composition and disease burden  an be assessed as the trial progresses.

• Reliance on chemicals as the only weed control option is difficult (almost impossible) in a run of dry years.
• This trial will cease at the end of 2004 (3 years too early to obtain meaningful results) unless other funding is found.
• The trial showed, in the 2003 season, that there was no yield penalty for waiting until rain for sowing, although grain protein was lower in these crops.

Ryegrass and barley grass were the dominant weed species along fence-lines.

Higher sowing rates resulted in higher dry matter yield at late flowering and higher seed yield with no significant differences between varieties 'Fenugreek' and 'A287'.

Spinnaker at 150ml/ha was the safest post-sowing-pre-emergent herbicide for use in fenugreek. Post-emergent herbicides with good crop safety included Broadstrike 25 g/ha + Uptake 0.5%, Buttress 2 L/ha, Buticide 2.5 L/ha and Broadstrike 25 g/ha + Buttress 1 L/ha.

• Post-Sowing-Pre-Emergent Spinnaker caused significant visual damage and significant yield loss in fenugreek in the very dry 2002 season.
• Few differences were observed among post-emergent treatments.
• Of the new varieties, little difference in herbicide tolerance was observed, however further work is needed in more typical growing conditions.

150118 and 150265 were the highest yielding fenugreek lines in this trial. At least two fenugreek varieties are being commercialised. Seed should be available in 2003.

Sowing more than 20kg of N with seed (seeder set at 9inch spacings) resulted in seedling burn and poor crop establishment.

• Crop nitrogen requirements should be applied at or before sowing as poor spring conditions can reduce crop responses to topdressed nitrogen.
• When drilling nitrogen with the seed, rates should not exceed 25 kg/ha (7" rowing spacing).
• Grain protein levens under 10.5% indicate crop yields are below thier optimum potential - apply additional nitrogen.

• Zinc (Zn) has been shown to be a clear limiting factor in achieving maximum fertiliser response from N and P on all soils sown in the SA Operation FerTill experiment program.
• Increased wheat grain yield of 4-6% has been achieved with Zn as a coat to DAP applied in each year over 3 years.
• This clearly questions the current practice of Zn application once every 3-4 years.
• These results suggest that Zn when used in combination with higher P and application should be considered every year.
• P and Zn placement are very effective management tools to reduce the severity of Rhizoctonia spp, in crops.
• Some P and Zn placement in the seed row of cereal crops is beneficial in reducing the severity of Rhizoctonia patch by up to 50%, increasing grain yield.

It is important to remember what the primary objective of seeding equipment is. Some farmers have been disappointed in the overall performance of banding fertiliser due to poor seed placement.

• Both desi and kabuli chickpea varieties suffered severe plant establishment reductions from fertiliser placement with the seed and with increasing fertiliser rates.
• Fertiliser rates of 20 kg P/ha and above placed with the seed had a significant negative effect on grain yields.
• The dry spring conditions have compressed achieved yields to that possible from the limited water supply. Differences in plant population still negatively influenced achieved yields. Yields increased with fertiliser rate up to about 20kg/ha of P in this particular season.

• Both desi and kabuli chickpea varieties suffered severe plant establishment reductions from
  fertiliser placement with the seed and with increasing fertiliser rates.
• All amounts of fertiliser placed with the seed had a significant negative effect of kabuli grain yields.
• Desi type PBA Slasher can tolerate low rate of fertiliser with the seed.
• Yields increased with fertiliser rate up to about 20kg/ha of P in this particular season and soil type

• Applying MAP with the seed at sowing resulted in a 25% increase in plant emergence compared to using DAP at Piednippie.
• Applying MAP at sowing resulted in higher grain yields and better water use efficiency (WUE) in plots which had high seeding rates at Nunjikompita.
• In combination with a high seeding rate, a blend of DAP and triple super phosphate (TSP) applied at sowing at Piednippie and Nunjikompita (plus urea) resulted in grain yields which were closer to the crop yield potential than the control.

• Kaspa continues to show a yield advantage over earlier maturing varieties and blends in regions with high yield potential (eg Turretfield) due to its later maturity and subsequent higher yield potential.
• Earlier maturing varieties and blends may confer a yield advantage over Kaspa in lower yielding situations/seasons.
• This work will continue for a number of years reusing the seed from each location to identify any potential benefit for growers using a mix of these varieties to manage pea yields across variable seasonal conditions.

• Commercial viability has been difficult to demonstrate.
• Field trials demonstrated that the H Senor was able to accurately classify annual ryegrass in several broadleaf crops, including canola, faba bean, lentil and field pea.
• Other grass weeds such as brome grass and wild oats were also correctly identified as grasses in these crops.

• Classification accuracy was lower for detection of grass weeds in cereal crops and broadleaf weeds in broadleaf crops, and these scenarios were not pursued for that reason.

• Emergence was 55 plants/m2 for Kaspa, 45 plants/m2 for Moonlight and 42 plants per/m2 for Sturt. Targeted densities were 50 plants/m2 for Kaspa and Moonlight and 40 plants/m2 for Sturt.
• All varieties responded similarly to the herbicide treatments. No visual damage was observed for any of the herbicide treatments. This was probably due to the dry conditions experienced.
• Grain yields were strongly correlated with weed populations, i.e. herbicides that gave good
  weed control resulted in highest grain yields. To overcome this affect, we used weed score as a covariate. This showed that Imazethapyr applied at double rates caused a significant reduction in yield (approximately 40%). This implies that the safety margin for this chemical is relatively low, therefor growers need to use caution and avoid overlapping within their crops.
• Sturt appears to have the best adaptation to dry environments with yields 50% greater than
  Kaspa and Moonlight. This is the same trend as has been observed in the breeding program.

• Despite a late break to the season (12 June), very favourable conditions followed resulting in exceptionally well grown plants and above average yields with very little disease.
• Yield declined in all varieties when densities were below 35-40 plants/ sq m.
• There were no significant yield responses above 35-40 plants/ sq m in all varieties except 96-262*1.
• Seed size increased with density for Kaspa, Moonlight & Parafield but unaffected in others
• Increasing density increased lodging in the semi-dwarf types (Kaspa, Moonlight, Yarrum and 96*262*1).
