This trial is part of larger GRDC funded project, which examines whether lower plant populations and later timed nitrogen approaches are suited to the HRZ in Australia, it also examines whether these techniques which were principally established for wheat can be used in malting barley, where high protein can be undesirable.

With the large majority of wheat cultivars now deemed to be susceptible to stripe rust, in particular the new WA pathotype, this trial was set up to look at economic response to different foliar fungicide timings. In addition the trial continued the evaluation of the strobilurin fungicides (as part of project SFS 00006), the first of which was registered for broad acre cereals in Australia in August 2004 (Amistar Xtra).

  • Within this overall objective there are a number of component objectives that are interrelated
  • To assess the impact of strobilurin fungicide over and above conventional triazole fungicides on nitrogen requirement for malting barley, in effect to quantify any interaction between disease management and applied nitrogen. 
  • To measure the effect of disease management using strobilurins on the yield and quality of winter wheat malting barley.
