Stubble management and retention

Managing the above ground biomass after harvest is an issue that growers deal with every year in planning for the next stage in their rotation. There are over 140 trials on Online Farm Trials covering issues around stubble management and retention. An interesting set of trials is on active stubble management for subsequent crop management. This set of recent trials through the ‘Stubble initiative’ (https://grdc.com.au/resources-and-publications/grdc-update-papers/tab-content/grdc-update-papers/2017/02/maintaining-profitable-farming-systems-with-retained-stubble-across-various-rainfall-environments) has results and reports on trial findings dealing with harvest efficiency, breakdown options, cropping sequences to manage stubble loads, sowing configurations and associated costs, grazing and weed management strategies. There are over 50 published trials for wheat, 15 for barley and 14 for canola in the southern and western regions.
